I live in Geelong and drive around Melbourne for work.
My favourite coffee places are; Double Shot in Montrose, a coffee van in a reserve on Swansea Rd, my preferred coffee place above all others. Montano in Bayswater when my delivery run doesn't take me past Double Shot. Capra coffee in Fyans St South Geelong is great. And a shout out to Coffee Cartel in Leather St, Breakwater and James St, Geelong. Excellent coffee and a funky bibe too but I don't get there much these days. Where are your favourite places? (if your suggestion is any large chain, just move on). Sent from my SM-N920I using Tapatalk

Mostly a local café, cheaper than Macca's and more consistent.
But occasionally Macca's, although I am not happy with their 'app', I am old and that **** is annoying, plus my phone is a work phone and has not data and for some reasons won't hook onto Macca's wifi, they have tried with no success so I am still using a card

I'm onto a good thing at work on the golf course, more often than not the girl in the pro shop is running late so I run out the pins and flags for a free brew every morning. Pretty good coffee too and needs no sweetener at that price

Any place ran by hipsters is usually good. Just don't expect them to be cheap all the time.
I'm not impressed that Maccas no longer have a tangible card for the 'buy 5 get one free' deal. It's all though the app now. |

Same.
I use merlo beans. No merlo in Adelaide but when in Brisbane it's the only coffee place I'll buy coffee from. Have tried others but yet to find one that beats what I make at home.

If in Perth SOR, Dolce & Salato at the Bull Creek Shopping Centre do fantastic coffee.
9-Seeds coffee shop on Marmion St in East Fremantle has to be the best though by far. Cars are lined up along the street every morning!

Tico’s drive thru coffee in Geelong Rd Brooklyn!
(And oddly, the owner immigrated to Melbourne from Costa Rica to make his fortune, while I’ve “immigrated” from Melbourne TO Costa Rica to lose mine!) https://m.facebook.com/ticosdrivethru/

If you're passing through Ringwood, check out 'Fingers Crossed' - 64 Maroondah Highway.
Cafe serves AXIL coffee and has some pretty well trained baristas. I also happen to own it, though you won't likely see me there ;)

I wont go to conglomerates; always small businesses. I got to a small local bakery on the way to work/golf.

unfortunately for a large percentage, its not a lot different to buying your coffee at a servo... I was sat at a table with the family once having an icecream, with clear sight to the mcCafe area. The staff member ground coffee in to 2 portafilters and left them sitting on the bench waiting for the next couple of orders... She probably thought she was being well prepared, but ground coffee will be well past its best by the time she needed to use it. Clearly the 'training' isn't proper 'barista training' in all stores, or for all staff.

I posted that as tongue in cheek.
I know Mccafe is hit and miss ... and mainly miss. But there have been a number of occasions I've had a pretty damn good one from them. It is all up to the Barista though to get it right at the time when making it. Even small "exclusive" cafes I have been to .... have made absolutely appalling coffee as well. If you can find a good one with a known Barista that is there all the time .... stick with it. I am lucky here at work ... we have a number outlets within our Campus ... and they are kept in check regarding quality with feedback reports from staff. The place I go to has won the on-campus award for 5 years running. And for good reason as well.

Case in point: specialty coffee brands will tell you that to optimum temperature for a milk based coffee will be approx 65 degrees. This suits well in "coffee snob" territories like inner-city where hipsters frequent (I use these terms jovially) - when you move out in to more suburban areas the expectation changes from a 'what is acceptable'. Many people have grown up drinking instant coffee - naturally the heat is in the boiling water and not the milk so therefore they drink coffee quite hot as a result. Milk coffees on the other hand cannot be as hot as the temperature is coming from the milk. The end result for some is that the coffee is 'terrible' because it's not hot enough - but we're trained to believe that to have it at a temperature resembling your instant with boiling will more than likely end up with burnt milk which is a no no.

Agree. No way I could run a coffee shop. Especially these days with all the low fat, soy, almond, etc milks that people request, and don't get me started on folks that add sugar.... No thanks. I'll just make my own.

My dad was a massive industrial roast fan, I’m talking caterers can a fortnight on his own.
I disliked coffee so much purely on the smell of this stuff un till I was in my late 20’s when I worked in Italy for a couple of months, the smell of the coffee in these little bars was intoxicating, I had to try it, and it tasted better than it smelt. Back in Sydney in the late 90’s the coffee was eh! At best, so I invested in a machine It was nothing special but it was better than I could get at most Cafeys, I’ve upgraded since and still love my home made coffee before I head off each morning and rarely by a takeaway

Following on from this, if you are the type of person that regularly buys coffee, even $2000 invested in machine and grinder will be cheaper in the long run.
Just don't get sucked in to anything fully auto or semi auto or worse still, a pod machine. Full manual with separate grinder is the only way

I've got a breville barista pro which was approx $750 - in built grinder but can adjust the grind and steam your own milk.
I'd love to have something more full on but can't justify the expense. I also have a $20k machine at the cafe that I have access to so that also makes it quite difficult heh

Probably one of the best auto correct typos ive seen in a while, but not to digress. I go site to site for work all around sydney so i do have my preffered places around the place. Whilst its sort of a chain, george gregan espresso always are top notch in my book. To be fair the only 2 i know of are in north Sydney and maquarie park, but its always great coffee. Deffinately not on the cheap end but the staff have uniforms and wear ties and stuff and its almost like they have formal training in coffee science. On a side note, i do work at the grounds in alexandria from time to time, and i buy my coffee from a better place down huntly street.

I was behind a lady in a coffee shop and heard her ask for "half skim milk, half full milk, 85 degrees." I get the 85 degrees bit (even though she sounded like a complete ****er) but whats the point in half skim milk and half full cream?

I think thats the equivalent of standing behind a person at maccas who orders a large double quater pounder meal and 6 nuggets then responds to the question coke for the drink and says diet coke thanks.
