Default Was my car dudded from factory?

well after changing my diff recently and selling off my old one i have been informed by a experienced diff person that my diff was not LSD!

i know for a fact that ED Fairmont Ghia's had 3.27 LSD from factory mine even had the high performance tag and yellow sticker on it indicating it was and also ED only had a 3.08 diff and only ghia/fairlane etc got 3.27 all of which were LSD.

i know its an old car and many things could have been changed in its life but the owner was an old guy who im sure didnt get the diff changed before he sold the car to me.

just wondering if anyone else has had this happen to them?

Nothing to say being an old guy, some dodgy mechanic thought, hmmmm LSD i can sell that, and swapped the diff over and put the tags back on it.

Did he open the diff to check? If he did the rotation check (where both axles spin the same same way) it could mean the LSD centre was totally stuffed

its very unusual to find a diff tagged as a LSD not actually having a LSD centre

Nah, i didn't end up getting a second opinion as i needed money for paintball.

Did you ever have it LSDing on your 16's or 17's? I know at heathcote with poo tires, my car would skip sideways and spin both wheels pretty easily.

What did the 'diff expert' look at to determine it wasn't an LSD ? It's probably just worn, i reckon.

Was it tagged LSD or High Performance, I didn't think High Performance neccassarily meant 'LSD'. At least your car came with LSD, I had to buy one, and now it's single again!

The tag means LSD. It's telling you that you need to put the right oil in there.

I'm guessing the person who's got your old diff has gone to have it rebuilt? Once the over is off you know straight away.

trust me guys when i picked up the diff from K mans house yesterday i thought maybe the lsd was stuffed, but when i pulled it apart today i found it wasnt lsd at all, just because it has a high performance tag on it it doesnt necassarily mean its lsd.

im in the process rebuilding a lsd to go in ther anyway and putting 3:45 gears in it as well

Are we 100% on this tag business? My car had 3.27 SS being a GLi manual, and it had the high performance tag.

From the factory, tag means LSD. Not sure on E-series, but X series also got a sticker in the driver's door jam.

But god knows what ricer has put the tag on. The only way to know 100% is to pull the backing plate off.

i cant really remember doing proper standstills with my 16's and 17's. i know in the wet it would LSD with 16's or 17's. i know on some hills if i stalled it up and got them to spin it would lsd also and that was in the dry.

its a mystery and yeah if the bits arent there for it to be LSD then obviously its not.

i trust bretts opinion because he deals with them all the time. and that is 2 people who have told me this now. i was sceptical at first and knew nothing about it. i just thought my diff was a bit fubar.

Used to have a EB GL 5.0 and the diff was tagged high performance, and definitely was not lsd

E series diffs with a High Performance tag are open wheel 4 pinion diffs. (Mostly on V8s)
If the tag says High Performace Slip Resistant, or High Performance LSD then it is a 4 pinion LSD.
Everything else is a 2 pinion open diff.

NOPE not right on the 2 pin bit.. EVERY 28 spline EB2-Au3 diff is 4 pin.
HIGHPERFORMANCE tag doesnt mean LSD, it may be the bigger bearing housing, but not sure what ford meant with it. I have seen lots with highperformance tags and not being l.s.d's

ah ok, but still a ED Ghia should have an LSD diff. its what they came with. even the EB2 Ghia wreck i had, had LSD. i cant 100% remember what the tag said on my old one but i know it had one.

I stand corrected on the 2 pinion bit, but the main point i was trying to make was, High Performance does not mean LSD.

My service manual says that LSD's are identifies by red filler plug, and open centers by black filler plugs.

doesnt matter now as i have finished building it so it now is a 3:45 lsd diff now with all new bearings.
i modified the lsd with heavier springs so instead of having the factory standard 30 pounds break off pressure this one has 75 pounds.By the way its for sale too due to the guy i built it for deciding he couldnt afford it anymore

im asking $750 for it as the gears and lsd cost me a bit to buy
