As drifting is the big thing and something that I am interested in I am faced with a dilemma. While I admire drifting I would not be caught dead in a Nissan Silvia or the likes. So for the aspiring drifter what are the best muscle alternatives??
From observations it appears that for a drift car you need rear wheel drive, good handling, short wheelbase and even weight distribution. So I'm guessing anything big block is out of the question and anything as big as a Falcon is starting to get too big. Seeing as Tokyo Drift has popularised a 67 Mustang drifting is it in fact possible to make classic muscle cars good drifting vehicles. In my head I have the following possibilities. #Chrysler Valiant Charger 265 Hemi/340 small block #Ford Mustang Windsor/Cleveland #Plymouth Barracuda LA V8 smallblock #Holden Torana 202ci/308ci #VB-VL Commodore RB30ET/308ci Any other ideas I am tempted to include the Falcon but perhaps it's longer wheelbase presents a challenge?? |

Chargers are even worse for weight distribution than a falcon,thay are very tail light,
a VL of any description is NOT a muscle car.. |

How about thinking outside the square RWD Holden/Isuzu Gemini with a supercharged V6 or blown 4, a Triumph TR7/8 or a Mazda RX7 S1 to S3 with an LS1 conversion. Maybe even an Alfa GTV 6 with a de-dion rear axle.
With a live axle the lateral (?) alignment of the wheels will remain parallel with the road but if you want to get negative camber you will have to get a bit creative.

never seen an overly successful muscle car do it..
a guy on here does well with his v8 ea i think it is..

erm, boldger won the drift series in a monaro, and at the last race is saw it had a carby sticking out the bonnet.
long wheelbase would be easier to hold very sideways without swapping ends, most falcons have pretty good weight distrubution, nugget378 might know more on that subject, i would like to see a ts50 with a shaker done up in sponsers smoke some rice burners

There has been a middle aged man driving a HSV GTO, drifting around courses in the USA along side of cars like the Nissan silvia, Skyline, Supra, and other drift cars and actually winning whole tournaments with it. I know it is obviously heavily modded, but you know!
Pretty much, you can take what ever car you please and turn it into a performance drift car if you have the money! |

Don't worry about a short wheelbase, AFAIK it makes it harder to drift because it will be twitchier?. A longer wheelbase would make it easier, I remember plenty of FPV Pursuit road tests where they claim its so easy to hold it sideways because of the long wheelbase. Saying that though it's supposed to be all in the setup, really stiff rear suspension and a mechanical LSD diff or locker.

The answer is obvious... the General Lee ;) Apparently the movie used some of America's Pro drifters for the stunt driving in the Charger...

Out of all the cars mentioned a torana would be the easiest to set up,the later LX shape not the LC-LJ.
They are a real easy car to setup for circuit racing and the same should apply for this,also great power to weight ratio,and they are very tuff looking... |

In the american D! championship there is Rys millen driving a pontiac GTO(monaro) and another guy driving a El Camino.. they both do really well too.. although obviously stripped out for pro racing..
and the mustang only drifts well in tokyo drift because they replaced the old V8 motor with a 450+hp Rb26DETT out of a GTR (Inline twin turbo 6cyl)
