I'd be going for a nice 17" or 19" LCD monitor myself, however a CRT still has it all over LCD's in the image quality stakes.

Rightio, fact of life. I recently setup an Athlon64 3500 with a Radeon 9550, and its got a LG 17" LCD screen. Played a few games on it, and a few FPS games, Joint Operation Typhoon Rising, Far Cry, Half-Life 2 etc. Tried a number of resolutions before finding the optimum one for the GFX card for each game. It looked just as crystal clear at 1280x1024 as it did at 800x600, 1024x768 and even 640x480.

Of course, its his decision and he'll buy whatever he wants, but don't go on talking nonsense because you like obsolete, retina-frying technology :togo:

I prefer using an LCD monitor for all my PC work.

I was using a 21" CRT for many years and it was very nice indeed, however it died a little while ago.
I gambled and purchased a cheap (relatively) 17" LCD - I will not use a CRT again.
I have several monitors in my office, and I much prefer to work with all the LCD's.

IME it's only the very expensive CRT's which perform really well and have no issues, but dollar for dollar, I'd have a LCD in a heart beat.

Colour uniformity, geometry, convergance errors, focus, and susceptibility to interference annoy me most about CRT's, none of which effect LCD's.

IMO, LCD is a definite upgrade over CRT in the PC world, though it is still a personal thing.

BTW, Steffo, LCD's do have a native resolution at which the image is pixel perfect, any res above that and they require the image to be scaled, and that can look nasty as information is lost.
When the res is lower than the native res, the image also needs scaling, this can cause lines to fatter than they should be, text to look fat and blurry, etc, etc. And that is a fact of life.
Looks like you're wrong yet again matey.

Rick.

Working in the IT Departement at a school I have to use a wide variety of monitors, and it is my opinion that LCDs tend to make colours look dull and lifeless...When you go to purchase your new monitor, go test one of each type out, and make decisions based on your experiance rather then what people say on these forums...

Like almost anything you'll get what you pay for.
CRT's are starting to get thin on the ground except at the upper end where there are still some good 19" and larger choices around but you'll pay for the better (read <.26 dot pitch or shadow mask) ones.
Picture quality is a matter of personal preference and your willingness to fiddle a bit. LCD's (at least the better ones) respond well to a bit of fiddling with colour temp settings but certainly produce a different image from good quality CRT's.

Having said that the Mitsubishi DV195 (just over the budget) offers 12ms response and excellent image quality as does the BenQ FP937 (just under budget).

In CRTs the Mitsubishi Diamond View DV997FD is well the pick of the bunch at under $300 offering maximum resolution of 1920 x 1440 pixels @ 97 Hz; 0.25 mm vertical dot pitch & 0.21 mm horizontal with a 3 year warranty but you'll need a lot of space to park it in.

Cheers
Russ
