It would be a big job, you would need bassically everything from the dash forwards. Youw would be better off buing a wrecked xr8 if you were planning this.

You're mad if you don't say yes.....

You will need to do the looms also, to physically put the engine and box in I would think that if you have everything else sorted it should be do-able in a day.

Physically putting the engine and box in will take about 6hrs.
Get the engine loom from the 8, which will plug upto your current dash loom and get the XR8 computer and plug that in.
I give it a solid 2 days if you know what your doing. Most things will plug and play.

If you go at my pace maybe about 2 years. There are a lot of little things that you will need to do that will take time, patience and money.

Well if your not interested in it, I'd be interested in the diff. But I think there might be another big problem for you.

Being a Series 3 and XR8, you can pretty much guarantee that the XR8 was IRS, which would mean the diff, tailshaft won't fit your car, unless he has the IRS for you to put into your car, which then again would be another massive job.

Cheers

Can you not just use the Original Tailshaft and Find a LSD from a Live Axle AU ?

Not too much trouble to have a custom tailshaft made if you need one.

Good point LG. Diff would be easy though, just keep the current diff and put the gears from the new one in, and if you can find an AU2 XR8 tailshaft, you'd be right.

Just reread what I wrote and I buggered it right up, I was thinking of the diff - few more live axle XR's produced in S2 and as LG said the vast majority of S3 XR8's were IRS in which case it's no good to you.

The tailshaft itself would be fine out of any Series and you could use any tailshaft as long as its from a V8 AU.

Not 100%, but even IRS Diff gears won't fit into his assuming 3.08 housing. I know, because I'm trying to get some gears in mine. You need to look for Skyline or Commodore type gears.

So if it's from a live axle xr8, then your all good. But if it's from an IRS xr8, you may find some more complications with the driveline.

Sounds like a very good deal Daniel - you should be able to sell off the IRS, tailshaft, and all your 6 cylinder stuff to nicely offset the purchase price.

I was considering a V8 conversion for mine as well a while back as I have a donor car handy, but I know that realistically I will never finish the job, and I never got as far as checking installation costs.

Good luck, but if it was me I'd still be going turbo, or sell it and buy an 8.

Nope I don't think they did. I think the only difference in tailshafts between the 6 & 8 would be the input into the back of the box and the way it bolts to the diff.

V8 Forte would have live axle. All AU XR8 sedans had IRS.
All AU utes (XL-XR8) had live axle.
All AU XR6HP had live axle, XR6 VCT had IRS.
Fairmont Ghia VCT/V8 had IRS all the rest have live axle.
