doesn't surprise me at all, have had friends go over seas in Europe and they do 120km on their highways and all the locals still road rage at them for going slow and they do 180km+

Actually saw on the news that authorities want to raise (yep, raise) the speed limit on this road. That's a rare thing.

However, now the "safety council" wants to see if there was anything speed related. There were fireworks in the vicinity and apparent fog.

Pretty tragic. Unfortunately with that many cars on a stretch of road its inevitable that these types of accidents will occur every so often. Looked like a few trucks couldn't pull up in time and have just collected cars that may not have been involved as they skid down the road.

There was apparently a smoke screen over the carriagway. Maybe from the Fireworks display in the field next to it.

i think with the production with all the fast cars over in Europe doesn't really help at all with such high speed crashes

Speed might have played a very important roll in this horrific accident, but this should not be blamed soley as the cause, people need to drive to the condition's, just because a certain road is sign posted at a certain speed does not mean it is safe to do that speed in all condition's.

Sadly this incident has happened.

I think we should all drive 1976 Honda Civics, then their would be no crashes. Lord.

The Brits are moving to 80mph, and this unique event won't stop that. I'll remind NSW has had similar crashes in fog on the F6, F3, Hume. Bargo was another, and that one involved early morning busfire smoke and fog conditions- joy. Use those rear fogs and keep speed down. Science knows fog type conditions leads folk into a false sense of security.

Aside from this bad one, another near Lancashire in similar conditions, multi-vehicles incl trucks.
