Well, I was fiddling behind my dash to try and get some climate control installed, and all was going sweetly....until it came time to connect the battery. I reconnected it, and about 30 seconds later, white smoke was coming out from under my bonnet. Not good. Anyway I stripped down the whole dash again today, but nothing looked fried today, the only damage I could find was this:
 (Sorry about the huge pic, I don't have a camera, so I had to use an old photo and circle what melted...) Circled is a green and blue thing, the green thing is slightly melted, and apart from that, everything looks good. All I want to know is, what are those blue/green things, what do they do, and what could have gone wrong to short them? |

are they the vacuum hoses? lol its hard to see from that far away!
are they wires, or plastic tubes?

They are most likely two diodes..... I'd wanna check your wire up as I'd guess there is a back feed somewhere.

Yes they are the diodes and can be easily replaced, but work out why they fried first.

What are the diodes for? Can I isolate the whole Climate wiring section and drive the car without climate for a while, or are the diodes required for other things too?

No idea really, but i am 99% sure they are on every loom so have some use, if you leave the plug out of the back of the climate control you should have no issue on shorting out, unless you have a bare wire floating about.

The same thing started smoking on dads DA.. I cleaned the battery terminals and no more smoke. I think they are actually resistors. I cut the old one open and it was a resistor inside anyway.

Alrighty. Reconnected the battery, all good...
got in the car, turn the key...nothing. all the instruments come alive, the headlights go on (even though they are in the off position), alarm works, immoboliser works... So pretty much all that's wrong now is that the starter doesn't...start, and something is wrong for the headlights to be on. Any ideas? |

the head lights come on wen u put the ignition on or allways on? the starter could be a few thing, is it in park is the simplest question, otherwise tap the solenoid with a hammer

Car is manual, so in PArk is not a problem...however how do you tell is main relays are blown?

Hehehe, i know the BZZZZt sound now :P My car caught fire today, melted some interior parts though :( A short led to some hell toxic smoke from the entire car(interior and underbonnet) Melted through the power cable for the amp... and not just the plastic (melted off all plastic in around 8 feet of cable), but through the metal too! It got HOT! Anyways, long story short, it melted stuff and it sucks.

One of my interior lights above the rear door shorted out & the switch melted into a blob the other day... I think the globe popped out causing the contacts to touch together. My mate got in the car & asked what this glob of plastic was doing hanging from the ceiling
