Most modern rifles are just as accurate as each other, so dont be put off by a cheaper brand. Yes, some are better than others, but evaluate what you are using it for, ie; target, hunting or both. Also consider accessories available such as scope and mounts, bi-pod, rests etc.
Mate, if you are reading SSAA magazine, at least once you would see that the 223 is probably the most popular calibre in the country and is not and never has been banned because of a supposed military origin. You are talking out of your ****.

I have only ever pulled the trigger on a Ruger mini 14 once, but i was very impressed with it. That was a .223 I think?

Ok, maybe im wrong about 223 being banned here, but in some nato countries it was.
.223 is the most popular cartridge in aus next to .22lr. .222 was the big choice many years ago and is almost non- existant now, the .223 having taken that crown. And I have been reading ssaa mags since I was a kid in the late 80s and 90s but not for the past few years and I know the 223 was around back then

That would be the Victorian Sambar rules for which the 223 is indeed illegal. Victorian rules only and nothing to do with a military use.

Is the law still the same? I remember you couldn't use a .270, but 30/30 was ok.

i've got a 1908 BSA Department of Defence 22 Training rifle at home and I use it every month.
i tried to find out what its worth but dealers are dealers and don't trust them
when i transferred the rego the dealer wanted it so bad, but now he says they are not worth anything maybe a couple of hundred.
