In layman terms torque is twisting force, but simply in real-word terms the more torque you have the easy it is to accelorate at any given rpm under load.
Example say your doing 75kmh in a S2000 in top gear and you accelorate without down shifting, jack all will happen, sure the S2000 pulls like 170kw, but it has no torque and the limited torque it does have is high up in the revs. Now say your in a 164kw EL XR6 and your doing 75 kmh in top gear on your T5, stuff will happen, depsite having a similiar peak hp output the S2000, the torque will get it accelorating in no time. Simply toquey motors are great if you dont like revving the guts out of your car to get it moving, your car is a heavy mofo, you tow stuff or you effortless performance. If you want more torque your option are limited, a undersquare or stroked motor will generate more torque than a undersquare motor (that is the piston stroke is wider than the piston bore), problem with stoked motors is they dont like to rev because the piston has to travel so far in each cycle (think Ford 4.0l = undersquare, Alfa 2.5 V6 = oversquare). Option 2 is get a turbo/blower vastly increases efficiency and with biger turbo's you generally get more torque (and more turbo lag) think EVO IX or WRX, small motors but pretty torquey in the mid range. Option 3 is clean you damn motor up, get it blueprinted, ports cleaned and stronger valve springs and all that, it may given some limited toque increases in addition to higer rev limit and increased hp. But really if you want more torque buy an stroker motor like the 4.0L you already have and be happy, as with everything automotive, its a double edged sword, but personally i prefer effortless perfomance to wringing the neck of the motors i own. * and if are really ИИИИed off with your acceloration of lack thereoff, go get a shorter diff gear set.
