Hey guys, I am now in the process of repainting my car with my dad. i thought it would be a good idea to start a thread to show you guys the progress. so here goes, the first pic is what it looked like just after i pulled the old bullbar off and chucked a new bumper on. The second pic is just the back after taking off the rear bumper and all sorts of trim off the tailgate, the third pic is the result of some serious grinding with a wire brush to get rid of some rust and just after that we put some rust killer on it, the fourth pic is of the bonnet and the condition it is in after sitting in the sun for many years, the fifth pic is just a side on pic showing the front bumper missing getting ready to be colour coded.
We will do more and hopefully complete through out the next 7-8 days and i will try and update every day, i'll see how i go. http://i47.photobucket.com/albums/f2...8/100_0798.jpg http://i47.photobucket.com/albums/f2...8/100_0805.jpg http://i47.photobucket.com/albums/f2...8/100_0806.jpg http://i47.photobucket.com/albums/f2...8/100_0808.jpg http://i47.photobucket.com/albums/f2...8/100_0809.jpg Thanks Mike |

Are you painting it the same colour?
curious though, the bonnet is really bad, but is the roof in the same condition? The rust isn't as bad as I have seen on others, so it should come up great.. Look forward to seeing your progress pics and hearing about it though... good luck with it......

Looks like a lot of work! What are you using? i.e. 2-pac, acryllic.

Day two and three.
Right, half of day two was spent running around picking up bits and peices from around the place like paint, thinners etc then we did a bit of sanding on the bonnet. first pic http://i47.photobucket.com/albums/f2...8/100_0810.jpg Is the bonnet after a quick play with the sander (it looks alot worse now that i have sanded it even more but anyway), pic two http://i47.photobucket.com/albums/f2...8/100_0812.jpg Is all the rust of the biggest hole cut out and other rust bits have been killed, pic three http://i47.photobucket.com/albums/f2...8/100_0813.jpg Is the begginings the the metal piece my dad crafted to fit the hole, pic four http://i47.photobucket.com/albums/f2...8/100_0814.jpg Is the metal welded in and some fibre glass filler used as a base to fill the other holes, pic five http://i47.photobucket.com/albums/f2...8/100_0819.jpg Is the piece welded in and covered in a couple layers of filler and some spray putty over the top, pic six http://i47.photobucket.com/albums/f2...8/100_0816.jpg Is also my dads handy work in reshaping the wheel arch after having rust cut out and pic seven http://i47.photobucket.com/albums/f2...8/100_0822.jpg Is just the boot after some very heavy sanding to get rid of some fairly deep craizing. Well thats about it for day two and three, tommorro we hope to finish all the machine sanding and finish going over it again with finer paper by hand and then shooting some primer on it. In answer to questions, fiery, yes were painting it the same colour, no the roof is in perfect nick for some reason, xrated, we are using acrylic followed by clear coats as it is metalic. Thanks heaps for you feedback guys I will get more pics as the days continue. Mike Last edited by Skooter; 16-04-2006 at 09:50 PM. Reason: spelling |

Update.
I forget what day im up to now i havent posted the last couple of days because there have been some fairly late nights so i havent botherd, but i am tonight. So pretty much all we have done in the last couple of days is hand sand with 240 after machine sanding with 80, then masked her up, then shot primer all over, then sanded, then more primer, then sanded, primed, sanded, primed, sanded, primed, sanded, you get the idea. And along the way we have filled any small dents and nicks. So pictures, the first two are of the falc all masked up and sanded ready to be primed, the third is the rear bumper all primed, the fourth is the second regulator tec srewed to the side of a bench, the fifth is hopefully the last coat of primer. The reason for the second regulator is that lots of water was getting through the regulator on the compressor as it was still in gas form, but with the second regulator connected to the compressor via 20m of hose(and then connecting the hose you work with to that 2nd regulator) the water in the compressed air has time to cool down and turn into liquid and the filter in the second regulator is able to catch it, this is an old trick my dad picked and almost completely eliminates water coming out of the spary gun.(as water is detrimental to the spraying proccess) http://i47.photobucket.com/albums/f2...8/100_0823.jpg http://i47.photobucket.com/albums/f2...8/100_0824.jpg http://i47.photobucket.com/albums/f2...8/100_0828.jpg http://i47.photobucket.com/albums/f2...8/100_0829.jpg http://i47.photobucket.com/albums/f2...8/100_0830.jpg Tommorrow the plan is to do some spot priming and then start shooting some colour! Thanks Mike |

looks like some good progress has been made... things are looking good
just a little question but, why did you guys decide not to colourcode the side mouldings / doorhandles... this would have been the perfect oportunity to... it makes the car look more modern in my opinion. heres some pics of my old wagon just to give you an idea of how it would look (its a 90 EA wagon btw..) http://www.fordforums.com.au/showpos...1&postcount=12 |

As jjM has just pointed out, please pull off your door handels and mirrors. Will make the world of difference in the end with not edges there. Please do this, it will look dodge if you don't.

looking good anyway man. i've just done me engine bay but it turned out ИИИИhouse in some spots. old man says the paint was drying before it hit so i'll have to sand it all up again, so i no how ya feel. plus me personally i think the side mouldings look good standard, better then painted, on some colour cars.

Update.
today we put all the colour on and clear coated it so all we need to do is a very light sand, cut and polish then wax, and buffing is in there somewhere. i will get pics tommorro. In answer to questions i did want to pull off the handels and colour code them and the mirrors but time is of the essense with my dad he works in karrartha and is only home this week, and i get my P's in like two weeks so i didn't want to wait another 4-5 weeks to have it finished so we couldn't do ant thing extra but in the future i will colour code the mirrors and handels and probably have to do some blending around the handels. And yes the window mouldings are masked. Thanks for the feedback Mike |

another update.
We finished all the colour and clear coating and it looks really good, but now the scary thing comes because you have to very lightly sand the clear coat with wet or dry paper to get rid of any 'orange peel' effect, we allmost finished doin that today it took us a while because in the proccess of taking off the masking some paint came off with it! so we had to do a couple of repairs but besides that its all good, should be finished tommorro hopefully can't wait! Photo's, just two i took in the morning before we started to take the masking off. http://i47.photobucket.com/albums/f2...8/100_0832.jpg http://i47.photobucket.com/albums/f2...8/100_0831.jpg Cheers Mike |
