I am pretty interested in the whole IRS topic here. What would be the main advantages of IRS over live? My guess would be ride comfort mainly? Does IRS help with axle tramp at all? I get it all the time on my live rear, and it's a pain in the butt (no pun intended! :P ). I am just not sure if the advantages are worth the extra weight penalty.

Is axle tramp sort of like rear end bunny hopping?

I thought you had this sorted with some new shocks Ev?

I did too GK, when the shocks were brand new. Now that they have worn in a bit, the rear end is starting to hop around again on vigorous clutch release. It's not as bad as it used to be, but it's back enough to be annoying.
Do you get it yourself at all mate? I am not sure if it is only symptomatic of having a LSD?
All I know is that dad's AUIII Ghia rides a hell of a lot smoother than my car. Not sure if it gets tramp because its auto and I value my life too much to thrash it on him! :P

You still didn't describe it though. Is it like a rear end bunny hop, or roo hop?
Does the car jerk around when doing this?

To be honest, I don't drop the clutch much "vigorously" as you put it. If I do, it's only a very short burst, with a little chirp into second. My daughter Alex is now making requests for me to do so when I leave for work! Classic! LOL!

I've never lit up the rear end, I'd hate to be replacing tyres all the time! LOL! You know how much I wanted your Tickford 17s last year and had to opt out of your offer! :

You have to make sure you get the right gears though, as I believe you have a standard Falcon, which means a 3.08 housing. Thus, you can't slot in a 3.45 or 3.73 BW gears, as they won't fit. You need to look for Skyline or Commodore gears I believe.

I didn't need to get my housing modified. BUT... the gearset that came in when the workshop ordered it wasn't the Falcon-sized one. I've got a slightly smaller diameter set as made for the VR Commodore. They reckon it'll be up to the task (IIRC the VR HSV GTS used the 3.73 gears behind a 5.7 litre stroker and T56 6-speed???) but a bit noisier than the Ford-specific gearset. So far it's a lot quieter than the original 3.23's that racked up nearly 330,000km LOL!

pedders charged me $500 i think it was to swap some bushes out that are on the outters of my IRS

they had to remove the whole IRS cradle to swap out the bushes

so if you have a decent jack or 3 you should be sweet

mine has irs it seems to hang on very well in most situations, definatley heavier though, 1 down fall is more maintenance and cost ,bushes,tie rods , half shafts, alignment, etc etc,

the TS50s etc have IRS if im thinking right
and they are on par or better handling than some BMW
and just look at their track times.. its not all grunt to get around a track

so i guess you could say .. they handle GREAT

Are the diff sizes the same between IRS and non IRS?
