Wise words monty and blueoval. There's just nothing like professionals cutting through the crap and telling you exactly what the go is rather than bumbling and making costly mistakes at every turn.
And quite right, overtime is the best way to do it. You've gotta weigh up what your time is worth!

Matt mate id listen to monty on that, really at the end of the day you can do it the cheap way and save some cash but down the track it will always come back to bite you, and when it does it hurts much more then just paying the extra to get it done right the first time round.
If i were you mate id slow the "gonna" plans down a bit and get back to square one "a driveable car". Get your auto sorted, but spend the time to do it right, dont jump on the next box you find, find out a little about it, then from there make a decision. Waiting for the right part to come along always pays of then jumping on the first thing you see. good luck to you mate, your very dedicated by the looks. Will

i got pulled up years and years ago for fangin it way too fast round a roundabout, the cop picked up on the fact i was driving an ex-cab and said 'well, at least the car is used to being driven like that!' he let me go. he was a real cop not a traffic cop, of course.

We are just about to do the same thing here. Except all the manual stuff is coming out and being replaced with an auto again (wife is about a month away from having first baby and its a little bit too much 'fun' for her to drive, especially in the wet). We were also thinking of buying a second hand box from wreckers or private and the local auto shop said they can use air pressure to test and electrically check all solenoids and bits while its out of the car. Will this give us a good idea as to its conditon or does it really have to be fitted to the car and tested that way?

I bought mine for 500 with 3 months warrenty from a well known wrecker,
I took a big gamble, and put it in and it was fine, Or u could always take it to a auto place and get them to check it out Up to you really

That didnt really answer anything, just told him where you bought yours...
My suggestion would be to take it to the trans shop and get them to crack it open (will cost a fee, but will be worth it) and have a look and see if its all ok. If it looks ok, put it in, and get a full flush and service straight away.

As u can see monty, i did suggest taking it to a auto place to get it checked out And he did mention he was considering buying a box from the wrecker, so i thought id post what i paid so he would get an idea on how much expecting to pay

How does the car drive with a higher rpm torque convertor? Have seen plently of old school v8s with big convertors that are a real pig of the line unless your really up it on the revs. What effect does it have on economy and general a to b driving?
