Could it have been a failure with the function of the car? I mean, everyone seems to be saying it was the drivers fault and perhaps it was, but you can't disregard a failure of the car itself.

Very sad and incredible pictures. Condolences to the family, friends and services.

Agreed - the reason for the impact at this stage is unknown. And with the condition of the car, if it was a mech failure, we may never know.
HOWEVER!
The limit there is 60; its clear from the pictures that the car was doing more than 100 (anyone wishing to try and dispute that needs help). The exessive speed is the drivers fault.

The vehicle was split down the middle on impact and parts of the car were found 75 metres up the road.

On sunday while driving to ingham, the wreck of a white van was sitting on the side of the road. It had run off the bruce highway and went head first into a tree. Talking to mate of mine who is a cop he was taking his familiy to Ingham on saturday and had come across the accident just minutes after impact.

He said the passenger was asleep in the van and had been flug out of the front window 10meters. The driver was pinned by his legs and needed to be cut out.
Am told that alcohol may have been a factor in that one.

Yep, yep. Understood and I agree. It has to get up to that speed to start with doesn't it. But, you can't cross off a mechanical fault of some sort just yet.

Almost needs a black box to work out how it happened.

Feel most sorry for the ambo's and police here.

Driver was incinerated in his seat, passenger flung out, horrific stuff.

Confirmed or a guess?

All the reports I'm hearing point to a single car incident.
Even for complete idiots, its a little close to the East Perth lockup, even at 1am on a weeknight, there are always cop cars around there.

from what i read on yahoo there were no bodies, the passenger was thrown from the car and killed on impact and the driver was incinerated, and that dna testing would be required to id him, shocking accident, but well done on the biforcation, not even mythbusters could get that to work

That is just unbelievable. Such a waste of life! They should make this into an ad of some sort with some sad music and then make younger drivers watch it once they've got their licence...

Doubt it, i remember an aritical in Street Machine about the Crash Investigation team, and almost all the time its driver error.

Feel sorry for the families.
As soon as it was announced on the radio this morning, the mandatory ban fast cars comments hit the air waves as well. Years ago it wasn't unusual for people of various ages to race off the freeway in the early hours of the morning onto riverside Drive, cops used to sit there lots grabbing the early morning racers. A friend who was with traffic in the late 80's always wondered how the Hyundai Excel he pulled over at 3 am on the same stretch of road didn't have an accident given th road issues and the fact he was doing 150km/h.
Don't thinl there would be much identifiable if it was a smaller car.

The most fitting way to describe that is "horrific" - wow.

We can safely assume the cause was speed but it'll be interesting to hear what the reason for the speed was and also what other factors (if any) were involved.

A lot of us give our cars the occasional blat with the loud pedal so we can't all sit on our high horses, however how sad that one bad decision can set off such an event. And to top it all off, this close to Christmas and the holiday/family season.

Condolences to the two effected families of the two young blokes, very sad.

Definitely an Omega. Not SV6 or SS. Check out the rims.

Terrible crash, but not a tragedy. The driver of this car knew what they were getting into before he hit the tree. It was his decision to nail the throttle, and get the car to a ridiculous speed. The fact that the car basically split in two is irrelevant.

Yup Does really matter what type of car is was, the guy behind the wheel is a dumbass, showoff or whatever you want to call him. Fact is he's now deceased and so is his mate. Their famlies and friends are the ones having to deal with it now over Xmas.

I have never seen a car break appart like that, especially that whole side coming off in one piece.

Correct. It's the families that are paying the ultimate price. The driver and passenger get off easy.

Terrible tragedy.. The worst possible thing that could happen at this time of the year...

The report on TV stated NO skid marks at all, so whatever happened, took place in the blink of an eye.

Yet another sad case of Speed Killed Kids. And now were heading into the silly season, is it my imagination or do others notice, that leading up to Xmas, people get more agro on the roads and speeding cars seem to be everywhere?

Stay safe everyone, life's to short as it is.
