My favorite, however, is the Cobra Daytona Coupes. Only six were built, and they only had 289s, but they were sufficient to beat Ferrari for the 1965 FIA GT world championship. And one of them went to the salt flats for top-speed runs.

Peter Brock (not your deceased Peter Brock—the other one) designed them.

I got to see one of the real ones a couple of years ago at Sebring before it went on sale at auction.

Yeah, and the irony of Brocks fate in a replica is scary.

Im sure the daytona spurred Ferrari to even skip some races.

R.I.P. Mr Shelby. Your contribution to the world of motorsport is appreciated by many, and we all thank you very much. I am happy to say that in my time on this planet, I have been lucky enough to sample three different examples of your machinery, and what brilliant machinery they were.

My all time favourite Shelby moment.

You got them Maseratis and whatever...let me build you a Cobra, then you'll see what a real car is like". So he did.
Cosby said when it arrived it was "this little blue thing with pipes coming out the side and wrapping all around the place and was it loud!". More importantly, he said "And when I squeezed inside it, there was a big speedo in front of me, and it started at zero, and went all the way around to 200mph, and underneath that there was a gap, and it had the words "Oh wow!"..."

RIP to a legend.

Greatest achievement - definitely the involvement in beating Ferrari through the Daytona Coupe program.

His legacy - the Cobra roadster will always live and one of the greatest sports cars of all time.

14 years ago I named my daughter Shelby in honour of him.
