I see the new one has still has the internal fuel cap on the passenger that one of my mates used to use as an ash tray - though not as large as the original cap so probably not as good as an ash tray :-)

Never been a concern, certainly wasn't when I had my Moke....

Come to think of it I'm 53 next and have never owned an ANCAP rated vehicle, guess I've been cheating the reaper......

I had a Red early 80's Moke that I poured money into, engine rebuild by Nev Hall to 1230cc, 13 inch rims, extractors, exhaust I build, electronic ignition I built and so on.

Only to have it stolen by Philip Daniels Aka Fix-it-Phil (carpenter) in S.A

Damn it was fun to drive!

The Moke was basically a Mini with a different body, but the open element gave it that extra edge of fun. I owned a couple of Minis but not a Moke, but a mate had one and we'd go bush with a block and tackle in the back to pull us out of waterholes. It was like a dinghy, you'd climb in and out over the gunwale - onto land or into the water depending where we were!

They're also special to me because I used to make them as an assembly line worker at the BMC factory, so they bring back lots of memories. They were the easiest ones to assemble of course so I was quite attached to them from the beginning!

Not completely a Moke story, but one job I had was lifting bodies (mixture of Minis and Mokes) off the "train" that came in pulled by a (I think Aveling Barford) tug from the press shop and loading them on the production line.

The bloke who drove the tug we called Mr Magoo because his eyesite was failing and he was trying to hide that fact from management. I'd have to wave him in with my arms like an aircraft carrier batman and then jump out of the way so I didn't get run over and then yell at him to stop at each move forward so I could line up the hoist with each car body.

I don't know how he made it over from the press shop and back, but I heard after I left that his career came to an end when he drove a whole trainload of car bodies into an excavation.

I reckon I nearly lost a finger to a Moke when I was training my replacement and he wasn't listening to me properly and closed the hoist into the lifting point under a Moke too early. I just felt it pinching the end of my finger and I whipped it out quicksmart. The lessons we learn in life!

One good point about the Moke was that, being so basic, it wasn't loaded with enough of those Lucas electricals for much to go wrong! A couple of screwdrivers, a hammer, a set of spanners, a spark gap measurer and a can of sewing machine oil for the SU carby pot - that's about all you needed. And a comb to get your hair back in place after a drive!

It looks all out of proportion.
Clearly to fit the Cherry motor in, they extended the front section/bonnet.
Just looks plain wrong. Itll be cheaper and better to get the classic with a 1275 engine in it!

I just had a look at the Australia inflation calculator. Someone mentioned in 1973 they cost $1000. In todays money that's the equivelent of $8418.75.

Surely $10k would be a much more reasonable asking price, especially taking into account that this new one still look like an old one. Atleast use the current mini as a bit of inspiration?
$23k is too high IMO, get a top of the range quady for less.

No, it's still out there somewhere, because there is no VIN or chassis number they are easy to hide. :(

Simply adjusting for inflation does not give a realistic price, as you need to take into account licencing, sourcing stamping tools (either new or old), components will still need testing/approval etc etc...

Then, as a niche model, the cost needs to amortised over a projected amount.

That's sad, poor thing's probably a heap of rust now. I'm sure they had engine and chassis nos. stamped on them because when I was working there in about 1966 I had to match job cards to put on them as I loaded them onto the production line.

This would be after the inflation of the Whitlam years. Sometime in the 70s they were $995, the last car for sale here under $1000. I remember it quite clearly!

Some people are asking as much as $30,000 with other restored versions down to $19,000

Just looked up my files - make that 1978 - had 56,000ks when I bought it, just the engine rebuild was $2,500 in 1995!
