Labor has sold out Australian workers for the Hippy vote, and the Libs figure workers aren't going to vote for them anyway, so better to make their constituents happy with cheaper Mercedes & Volvos.

I was talking about history, not filmography. The British attack on the Dardanelles Peninsula was a tactical victory for Turkey. Afterwards the British withdrew to Egypt.

However this thread isn't about that so I didn't feel it necessary to expand on my comment.

Turkey is a modern country with a reasonably high standard of living. They were introduced to the automobile before Australia and for the most part of the early 20th century they had far more experience building them. Their economy has maintained a reasonable strength over the last hundred years, even counting for the dissolution of the Ottoman empire.

I don't understand why people think of them as 3rd world. That is true ignorance.

It's because they haven't been there and have no clue. They go on what they hear online or in the media. Ive been there it's a fantastic place.

Holden and Toyota always were the strong ones though. Ford was hanging on for the enthusiasts and Mitsi wen't under cause the 380 was a big dud, the should've stuck to Diamantes and Galants.

The economy of Turkey is defined as an emerging market economy by the IMF.[27] Turkey is among the world's developed countries according to the CIA World Factbook.[28] Turkey is also defined by economists and political scientists as one of the world's newly industrialized countries. Turkey has the world's 18th largest nominal GDP,[1] and 17th largest GDP by PPP.[1] The country is among the world's leading producers of agricultural products; textiles; motor vehicles, ships and other transportation equipment; construction materials; consumer electronics and home appliances.

We could take a leaf out of their book.

The Australian car industry?

Nissan - not profitable under Button plan
Mitsu - not profitable under Button plan
Ford - saved by BA Falcon & Terrritory under Geoff Polites but lost momentum and eventually bowed out under Dearborn's dictates.

Holden - precarious position with Ford going as 3 manufacturers need to make local parts supplier network viable. Poor Govt response pushed Holden to shut up shop.
Toyota - as above with supplier base but when Holden pulled up stumps that was the "get out" trigger.

Actually, can anybody actually confirm WHERE current Renaults are made?
(Especially, say a 2103 Fluence?)

The data I've read (which I gather is just extracted from the default carsales database) says they are built in Turkey. However when I look at the VIN, they begin with "VF" which is France. Or more correctly VF1 is Renault France's WMI.
Now within Europe, manufacturers can use the WMI of their headquarters, but Turkey is not part of Europe!

Google is your friend ;)
For the Australian market, the Fluence is sourced from the Renault Samsung Motors factory in Busan, South Korea

As I see it at one stage the aussie market Renaults were coming mostly from Samsung.

Old Koleos (based on X-Trail) was also manufactured in Busan.

Cars are multinational these days, our Czech Republic built Skoda has parts marked from Turkey and Germany. That's easily seen under the bonnet on guards, brackets and latches. Probably more countries under the skin that you never see.

So how do they justify putting a French VIN on them?

So I know have three conflicting pieces of information: VIN is French, carsales says Turkey, and Wikipedia says Korea.

It is most like arriving from Turkey. I know there's a Renault-Oyak factory in Turkey that produces Fluence and Clio models.

In four years they produced 1 million motors

Wow, Samsung cars. If they are anything like their horrible mobile phone range, owner needs to be rid of them within 12 months of ownership, they are that bad... So now we have Thai Toyotas, Korean Renaults, Japanese Peugeots, Indian Suzukis, African BMWs.. next will be Chinese Commodores?

In the end, I contacted Renault Australia. Car was made in Korea.

(Obviously the build plate would have said that, just a bit hard to know with a French VIN.)

Yeah, Samsung sell cars in Korea. It seems to be some sort of partnership with Renault and Nissan. I think they are leaning towards the European brand (based on how I saw them advertised) because there is a bit of underlying rivalry between Korea and Japan.

The SM5 looked like it was based on the Pulsar and the SM7 on the Maxima.

Aussie market Renault latitude was the SM5 before they dropped it. It is Renault laguna/maxima based.
