When I was a boy in the early sixties I made most of my public phone calls for free. I had a sixpence attached to a piece of strong cotton with a matchstick tied 3 or 4 inches from the coin to stop it from going in too far. When I was finished I just pulled the coin back out, ready for the next call.

Worked really on the phones that had the slope thing that had bee converted from pennies to sixpence.

For three decades I have used this service on 31st December to check that I have the correct time for the big countdown. Now how do I check the correct time? Or should I be totally oblivious and just join in when somebody thinks 'it is close enough so lets go'?
