Some of the newer ones you can't even tell that they are switched on. Then they released some in diesel, plus the build quality went down hill when they tried to increase volume and lower the price. They get a lot of criticism for build quality but the older ones are great. We had one issue with a window mechanism in 3 years of daily driving.

Apparently the modern Maserati's, Ghibli and Quattroporte, feature a lot of Jeep switch gear and electronic components. Fine for a $50,000 Jeep, a little cheeky in $150,000 products.

My FN Mustang GT fitted with a Borla ATAK exhaust has a pretty insane cold start racket. It’s too loud for a lot of people but sounds amazing going through the gears.
But I think the Mercedes Mclaren SLR is about as tough a road car can sound.

The ATAK is so gloriously loud!

Those SLR's were beasts, always loved this review by 5th Gear, even Tiff had trouble taming it.

Quiet mode is about as loud as a stock one in race mode.
Every other mode is just mental. Seriously it hurts your ears if you start it in the garage on a cold start with the door open. Rattles the whole house. It makes Harley owners cry.
Neighbors love it, not.

I put a Borla Touring Cat-Back on my 2017 pretty early on, the standard exhaust was just too quiet. The newer 2018+ cars with the standard active exhaust would have really dented the sales of aftermarket exhausts for Mustang's.

The hierarchy of noise with Borla starts with the Touring ("Deep & Strong") progresses to the S-Type ("Classic racing howl") then delves into downright rowdy with the ATAK ("Stadium volume!"). If I had my time again, I would have gone with the S-Type as it has more crackle in it.

All three including the Touring with the resonator are considered illegal in terms of noise output, so tread lightly where appropriate.

Even with the lowly Touring, my neighbors have subtly noted the loudness of my Mustang. I would imagine that would be most apparent when I used to start the thing up a 7am on a Sunday! Don't care one bit though! I have listened to late night boozing, barking dogs and motorbikes from various neighbors over the years, so if my Mustang makes a bit noise, so be it!

Meanwhile, I have this useless thing taking up space in my storage facility -

Default Your Favorite Car Sound

I’ve got a full FN system in the shed. I pulled it off the car before I even drove it.
It will go back on the car if the new owners don’t want the Borla.
The ATAK will go on the next one due in a few months.
If it sells on the car I’ll get another ATAK system but maybe with carbon tips.

Listening to a Smoking Tire podcast today with Gordon Murray led me to seeking out a video on the sound of the Cosworth V12 fitted to the T.50 -

I'm not normally into such exotic machinery, but you can't deny the magic of 12 cylinders and 12,400 rpm.

Talking Gordon Murray, the McLarin F1's V12 is a favorite of mine too -

****, you beat me to it I was going to chuck up MK2 XR5/RS Focus as well, 5 cylinder sound is majestic.

I love how masculine the MK2 RS Focus looks as well with its angles, such a mint looking car and the bonnet vents.

Lamborghini/VAG V10 is another one which sounds absolutely mint.

Honorable mention to Holden 304

Thats a good sound, a familiar one too I like how similar they sound to the RS's of old minus the hisses and crackling. A nod to their heritage if you will.

I was annoyed when I picked up my Japanese v8 Toyota/Lexus years ago.

I was looking for a v8 commodore or falcon but they were all ratty and then I saw this v8 Lexus and was blown away, a 25 year old terrific car with more tech than a 2015 Australian car. Half the price too!

I bought the car without hearing it rev up, just based on an online ad, purely on looks and 'awesomeness'.

You'd floor the thing and it sounded like a muffled vacuum or silent F1 car or something, not a meaty "gtfo the way" Aussie sound which I wanted...

So I chopped the exhaust off and fitted pipes and it still sounded a bit crap.

Tell ya what though, it beat Xr6 turbos off the line and to about 120kmh... No 'stock' xr6 turbo ever got ahead of me. Cleverly I'd stop accelerating at 120kmh though to save face so nobody would realize their car is actually quicker above that speed, lol.

Terrific cars when in good condition - the Lexus LS 400 and Toyota Soarer v8.

They just sound crap if you're an Aussie like myself.

If you get the exhaust right, its one of the best sounding v8s around without touching the cams. I had one, with a custom exhaust, a small kiss pipe (50 cent size) and magnaflow (or was it supercat?)....sounded amazing and went quicker than what the papers say. Also did my own CAI using instructions from the Lexus Soarer Club of Aus. The car was sold on the sound alone, first buyer came to see it, drove it for 5 minutes, said it was the best sounding v8 he has ever heard, and paid for it there and then.

Have also heard of chopped up versions of the stock exhausts which can be really ordinary.

The v8 Soarer I had regularly got 6~ seconds to 100kmh type of runs.
The books say 7.5 seconds, lol.

This is because they quote the USA Lexus Sc400 figures, where the engine is detuned and has another cat, so loses a few hp. (And a few other things).

The USA Lexus Sc400 is a piece of crap compared to the engineering marvel of the Japanese Toyota Soarer version. The soarer had airbag suspension and everything.

So, if ya find another v8 soarer, try get it before everyone wakes up and prices sky rocket.

Parts are getting harder to find such as door skins, racks, computers, so keep that in mind.

It's a v8 supra in the end.

Stock form already is quicker than xr6 BA/BF turbos as mentioned, somewhat.

Put a turbo or supercharger on the v8, you'll be laughing!

The Japanese Soarer v8 is possibly the best kept car secret among the car community.

Clarkson reviews the highest model Soarer.

1. The rumble of an old school V8, particularly through a set of 180s with minimal muffling.

2. The sound of webers under acceleration.

And while I love the sound of a high-revving V12 also, the T50 while sounding brilliant on a dyno, doesnt sound that great in the car. Not as good as the Valkyrie, it (T50) seems to lack the overtones you'd expect.

Default Re: Your Favorite Car Sound

I posted this thread a year ago but somehow managed to list a couple of local favorites of mine.

I'm a little bit strange in that I like the thrashier noise produced by the NA Barra compared to the Turbo. Of course, the Turbo has a deeper burble to the exhaust, but without the turbo, the NA is less muffled in engine tone

Zone in at about 1.30min to hear what I mean.

And the Miami V8's never get old. Especially like the ignition cut snap-crack on the automatic versions. And the induction wine from the supercharger. I even like the sound of the long cranking stater motor.

The induction wine and snort at 1.20min is delicious -

I could listen to those for hours!
