I had knee reconstruction done years ago and i remember that it hurt like hell ... it took me about 5 mths to walk then i stufed it again (dont know how) then back in again for a arthroscopy and it took me about 3-4 weeks to get over that I was 17 at the time and things heal faster(thats what the docs say) now im 30 and bike rideing is good and seems to help a bit i was swimming but it gets to cold here .. and i was told im not to get over 90kg. or face new surgery..
Hope you better soon

lol Zebra. I guess my expectations as to what would happen after this operation was a bit to high. I was under the impression that I would be walking after surgery (so a little bit annoyed at myself for that). I am starting to worry that I wont be able to work on Monday. Hopefully the Physio can do wonders. I agree some people on here are a bit trigger happy...

Just wondering who has had a knee arthroscopy and how long did it take you to a least walk?

thanks...
I've been needing one for several years now, but becuase of work commitments and a general hate of hospitals I've managed to keep my knee in a decent condition by giving up my beloved sport. Soccer.

I can play with the kids and now have a coaches licence & coach the kids at the local club. Just can't play competition anymore, as the pain after is horrendous.

Maybe one day.

How long did it take?

I apologize if i offended you but you did not say that you had more than exploritory surgery. I explained what i did and so as to make it easier for you to understand. So now that i have apologised for offending you by being blunt could you please stop making a point of it..

Recovery depends on a few things.

1. What they did whilst "having a look"
2. Skill of surgeon
3. Patient compliance to the recovery program.

ANY knee "scope" will hurt for a few weeks at least. This is dead normal. Usually the doc removes any loose or fraying soft tissue, and this is what causes the majority of the pain. The joint is distended with fluid too, aiding visualisation, but doesn't help the pain afterwards! Fluid can be forced into the surrounding muscles and tissues, and the distention can take a while to get back to normal, and hurts a lot I am told!

Any ACL/PCL reconstruction recovery is about 3-6 months! My brother is at month 4 from an ACL reco with the best ACL surgeon I know, and the knee is still a bit swollen, and not yet back to normal. This guy would give the least pain and the best healing time of just about anyone I know of, so it does take time.

Mrs Casper I can confirm from first hand experience taking the hamstring graft with the corer is the worst part to witness. Still turns my stomach after 3 years of witnessing it. That alone would have to hurt like a bee-arch.

Pick your surgeon, find out what the surgeon specialises in, and see a knee specialist for your knee etc. Ask the receptionist at the surgery, they know. If you are friendly with your GP, get a referral to the "right" surgeon.

Shark Cartlidge - Glucosamine and Chondroitin Sulphate will definately help, unless you are alergic to seafood!! It's usually nothing to do with sharks, and a lot more to do with prawn and crab shells, but that simply wouldn't sell as well. Several ortho surgeons I know reckon it does work. And that is a big thing from the pure western medicine community believe me. It's worth a shot, but takes TIME to work, like weeks....

Active reabilitation is the final key, so keep up the exercises as best you can. This is where I hear of 90% of patients falling down, they get lazy, or push the joint too soon. Joints don't repair like normal tissue as they don't have direct contact with the blood supply, and rely on repair to take place across the joint "fluid", and this slows things down even further.

The Glucosamine and Chondroitin Sulfate sounds like it is worth a try, Googled it & found a lot of info.

One site did trial test with dosages of; 'The amount used in studies of glucosamine was 1,500 mg per day and in studies of chondroitin sulfate, 1,200 mg per day was used.'

Blackmores tablets are; Chondroitin sulfate-bovine sodium 90% 250mg
(chondroitin sulfate sodium 225mg)
Glucosamine hydrochloride 750mg
Manganese gluconate (Manganese 1mg) 8.77 mg
Borax (Boron 1mg) 8.80mg

With a recommendation of two tablets. Might try these.

A recommended dose over a long time seems to be the key. Taking 10 tabs in one hit and hoping for an overnight result won't work. These products seem to build up in the joint over time, and cushion it, like a gel, from what little I know.

My GP just gave me a list of local surgeons which I wasnt too keen on. So did a bit of research and talked to a few people. Ended up going to the surgeon who does the Brisbane Lions AFL. Unfortunately the waiting list was long but eventually got in and the rest is history.

I have every intention of using glucosamine. Some people swear by it.

Anyway thanks for the info...it has been very welcomed...
