Greenmachine, you seem to have the mistaken impression that the melbourne cup is actually about horse racing?

Your synopsis of all things Australian has omitted one of Australia's most renowned habits.... GAMBLING!!!

The average per head for a year's worth of gambling on G-G's is around $2 per week and i'd wager that 99% of this goes on the melbourne cup. Been down to the TAB this morning? I was in line for 45 minutes... but do you think anyone really cares about the race, or the other 8 (9?) races on at flemington today??

Also - if you have a grievance with all the young ladies getting around in short skirts/dresses and minimalist tops (no matter which city you're in, this occurs on the 1st tuesday of November!)... well sir, i suggest you develop an appreciation for the simple things in life!

Sadly, I care for none of the above points. I can't afford to gamble, and theres isn't a woman within half a k of me under the age of 50.

My complaint stands.

If this is the case then it would appear your complaint is valid!!!

What do you mean there's not australian about it?

It's all about getting plastered.

How much more australian can you get?

Most the people at the race or watching the race couldn't give a damn which of those future-dog-food-ingredients win the race.. it's all about drinking from 10am onwards on a week day without being sent to meetings!

So if you could afford to gamble and there were lots of young females dressed in not too much at all around you then you wouldn't actually mind the holiday...

On your lunch break go to the nearest pub (even for a glass of water) and that will cheer you up : :

If I could afford to gamble and there were scantily clad young ladies about, do you think I'd be on AFF conversing with you lot?

Don't get me wrong - Youse are all great blokes and shoola's and stuff, but compared with beer and breasts... well... there really is no comparison.

Does this bloody race start soon? The dickheads next door are standing in the foyer drinking champagne... I may have to grab another coffee and go and blow smoke in their faces...

Picnic day for sure! double time and a half for all bunnings (casual) employees! suits me just fine, as no-one goes to bunnings anyway because they're watching the race.

I'm just going to sit here enjoying the last day of a five day weekend, after getting out of bed at the leisurely hour of 11:00 am and having breakfast cooked for me............

You blew it! had you slept in past midday on 3 out of the 5 days you'd have been eligible for a student grant.

They talk about it like its Bathurst, except its horses and lasts for like 2 minutes or something? most overrated sporting event I've ever seen. I can only assume it is so popular because it means the upper class can show off.

Seing im not in Melbourne, I'd so lock all my employees in a room during the race then let them out at the end and make them work 10min longer at the end of the day.

The whole "afternoon off" theory for the rest of aus is full-o-sheet. If other states want the Melbourne cup off they should forgoe hollidays such as "Adelaide Cup Day" etc. This country has too many PDO/RDO/Pub Holidays.

Whilst im on my high horse.........no, that will do for today

Now get back to work!

At least if it was a Nation wide holiday, I'd be able to ignore the hoohaa, and wouldn't be forced to sit and eat and drink and watch some poncy little sod crying in the emotion of it all in close proximity to the accountants and the bosses PA who I'm normally very successfull at avoiding contact with....
