actually under the wheels/wings are the strongest part of a plane hence the best seats to have, usually a plane either goes head first into something or the rear hits and splits on impact..

but on topic this thing is huge and def is part of aviation history
cant wait for interior pics etc

With the Airbus Flight Control Software ha! It'll quickly recognise how close to terrain you're flying toward and engage a function called Alpha Floor (unless of course you've got the undercarriage lowered). This means firstly it gently takes control off the side stick inputs and next thing you know you're hurtling back skywards with engines at Maximum Continuous Thrust.

Insofar as the 747 Advanced, the only thing that was halting its development was the engine technology to meet the upcoming ICAO Chapter 4 noise regulations, and obviously reduced fuel burn again. The upcoming powerplants for the B787 and A350, derived from the R&D behind the GP7200 engines on the A380 have allowed the breakthrough to occur for the Boeing 747 Adv to go ahead.

Surely if you were planning a terrorist attack with that plane you'd know that and lower the gear and bam! I don't think they'd care about aerodynamic drag.

Shhhh don't give them ideas lol! Most jst commercial aircraft have a maximum gear extension speed of around 270 knots still, so yeap could still do a fair bit of damage before the undercarriage even gets torn off the airframe.

Actually, or I might be wrong on this....

Even with the undercarriage down, the EGPWS (Enhanced Ground Proximity Warning System), which works off a terrain and airport database coupled with the aircraft's GPS receiver recognises you're heading towards something other than a runway chances are it will still take over and engage Alpha Floor.

This system was specifically designed to reduce controlled flight into terrain accidents (which form the majority of crashes these days), particularly on approach to airports surrounded by mountainous terrain.

Motors still take a while to spool up though and if a pilot was to do something real stupid (or a terrorist) planes can still crash into terrain. Less likely than in the past, but it still does happen.

<<<<< Pick me Pick me! ;)

I believe there is only one An225 flying around and that was only made flyable again recently. The Russkis are also restarting the line for the An124, I heard they might make it longer.
I hope they make the Advanced Jumbo, they still build F15 Eagles and they are nearly as old. Don't need a new shape if the original was good anyway!
Not trying to start a flame-war but here is a thread from my normal home!

C4B had a press pass so got some very good shots. Some of Mr B's pictures are on there too.

Yes, there is currently only one AN225 Mriya, although they're considering making a second (at the cost of 200 million euro's).

The longer one you're talking about is the proprosed AN-325 (might have been 335), which adds another engine, at the back (like on the Boeing 727 or McDonald-Douglas DC-10 and MD-11)... huge, huge plane that would be.

Did you all know that Russia took the design prints from the French and Brittish and flew
a plane more advanced than the Concorde before the Concorde was released.
It was called the Tupolev TU-144.
It crashed at the French Airshow in the early 70's, reportedly because a Mirage fighter left a huge wake in front of it whilst taking spy shots.
NASA recently commisioned one to do supersonic tests, as they believed it was a better aircraft than the Concorde.

I'd like to see the Boeing and the Airbus together so we all could get a perspective view of how much bigger the Airbus A380 looks.
Cheers John

Great pic, the seats seem a bit flat though, could do with some Recaros.

Should we add this to bindi's thread on things that are harmful to the environment? Imagine how much juice this baby would chew. That'd be enough fuel to feed a third world V8 country for a year! ha ha

ROFL. A few years back an A340 on approach to Heathrow had to be guided all the way in by ATC when all the navigation screens froze up after "Loading Navigation Data" appeared. It was typical crappy London weather at the time too.

As far as fuel burn is concerned, I thought I'd add the following graphs to show how far jet engine technology has come in the last few decades.

This one compares aviation fuel usage compared with other industries.
