the great ocean road is sure tops, but is now an 80 zone. Once I did the drive from Apollo Bay to Lorne in 22 minutes, with no speeding in towns at all, and hardly anywhere else, fantastic road(when a 100 zone). With all the tourists, its not worth bothering anymore. Maybe go for a drive in winter during a week day, or in the middle of the night in summer (roads grippy on summer nights).

Twice I have been through there drving. The second time went a hell of a lot quicker than 110km to get away from a semi. It just came behind me so quickly I thought I was finished.

Only annoying thing is there isn't much room to stop on the side of the road, to let the semi pass. But I think they have started changing that part of the princes.
You wouldn't be talking about the Monaro would you? I do that run from Canberra to Lakes Entrance in four hours flat! Brilliant drive. The Monaro Hwy gets interesting about 30 minutes past Cooma when you head down towards Cann River. Tall pine trees enveloping the blacktop. Long fast stretches met with tight bends.

Another drive I enjoy is the drop off to Bega and the drive from Bermagui to Tanja. Magic views and great roads. The drive from Pakenham up to Gembrook in Victoria also used to be a favourite. Although its a bit rough.

Australia has so many great roads to drive / ride and for different reasons. In WA, I'd say the road between Nannup and Manjimup that wanders through the valley of the giants. In SA Gorge road without doubt. Victoria has the great ocean road but I haven't riden on it for 20 years.

On a different tact though, the Nullabor, particularly at night, and the road from Hawker to Pt Augusta in SA makes you want to turn up the Cold Chisel and think about how good it is to be an Australian with our outback.

You could drive the Canning Stock Route if you feel like a challenge (For all the Kiwi's, this is not an annual event!)

I suppose any road with good company and without lights and camera's won't dissappoint.

Ooooh yeah, damn straight! I prefer coming back up to the trip down, neither way is fun if ya get stuck behind some drongo who insists on cooking their brakes the whole way though. Haven't done the trip in the VN yet but I'll get round to it eventually.

The road isn't designed for high speed, so enjoy the 2nd and 3rd gears through the corners, then just lean on the right pedal whilst not going over the 100km limit.

Then you can reach Woodend, top up with BP Ultimate and grab an award winning Vanilla Slice at Bourkies bakery over the road from the BP. They are certainly something! Bourkies currently make 750 snot blocks a day, and they all get sold.

Once you're finished, you can either go back over the mount, or just tootle down the Calder and back to Melbourne. Personally, I'd go back over the mountain, the tight corners are much more fun going up hill!

Remeber to have a rest at Mt.Macedon before you start the descent. It's a long straight drop with a sharp right at the end, if your brakes are tired after the sprint, you could risk doing some nasty damage to your ride. Let them cool whilst you're enjoying a cool lemonade at the mt.pub.

Oh, make sure you keep the speed down through the towns, they're small townships and the last thing you want to do is get the locals warning the police of your presence.

Dammit.. been too long since I did the Mt Macedon run.. a great way to spend an afternoon and in winter you get to drive through the clouds.

As for something more local BLC.. A blast out past the Ford proving grounds at the You Yangs and into the Brisbane ranges around Anakie is well worth a couple hours of fun.

Monaro highway is from Cann River to Cooma, Princess goes up the coast into NSW. Both are very nice roads for some scenic driving, like it was said before just have to watch for trucks and also 4WD's and sedans towing boats and caravans.

Bairnsdale to Hotham is also another really good drive, although we normally only used to drive up to Swifts Creek(bout 30min shy Hotham), just for golf, really nice course there cut out of a pine forest. Hard to find out of town, but well worth it, and the bakery in town was something else.

Well, went driving up Noojee road a few times this weekend (came back to Lilydale to get some stuff), plus went up to the ada tree, mt baw baw and some other areas.. Was fun driving, sept now my wallet's a lot lighter, and the van is filthy.

I also forgot how light van's are in the back end.. Had my first spin, bit scary. Got to learn it's limits off public roads and things though, which is darn handy.

OK, I got a long one.

From Newcastle, head to Maitland. Go through Maitland towards the 'Upper Allyn' through Lorn and Paterson.

Just past East Gresford turn right to go Dungog. There's a moderate road up over the hill-line to Dungog.

In Dungog, follow the signs to Stroud. The road between Dungog and Stroud has recently been tarred and is an absolute cracker of a road.

At Stroud, turn left on the Buckets Way - an ordinary road on it's own. Just continue on to Gloucester.

At Gloucester, follow the signs to Walcha and head up Thunderbolts Way. There are signs at each end of Thunderbolts that say 'Motorcyclists, this is not Eastern Creek, talke it easy' or some such. This road is superb - taking you from the coastal valleys of the Barrington ranges up to the edge of the Armidale Plateau.

A few kays into the Plateau, look for a sign to the left for Tamworth. This road is dirt for about 5ks. Continue on this road and you will find Port Stephens Cutting which will take you back down the backend of the Barringtons to it's inland valleys. This bit is tarred, and on most of the road there is only width for 1.5 cars. But it cuts back and forth and back and forth. Not so good in this downward direction - is much more fun on the way back up.

Then follow the road the rest of the way to Tamworth.

If you're keen you could turn north on the New England towards Armidale before getting to Tamworth, and then turn right off trhe New England and onto the Oxley Highway. There's a bit of interest between the turn-off and the plateau.

Continue on through Walcha and after awhile the road becaomes brilliant again - going back down the coastal hills to Wauchope and Port Macquaire.

On the way down the coast back to Newcastle you have two choices - drive in to Forster and come down the Lakes way. But in my opinion the old Pacific Highway turnoff just past Coolongalook that comes out at Buladelah is just as much fun, and goes through the same ranges as the Lakes Way. The roads are wide and wind quite a bit, which makes you wonder how painful it must have been following trucks through here when it was the main road. Watch out for branches and leaves on the road, it can spoil the fun a bit.

Took the wagon around there last night. Gotta love the sound of a booming manual V8 bouncing off the walls from Griffin bend all the way up to Reid Park and the the run from Skyline down to Forrest Elbow. 2nd and 3rd gear, V8 and Mt Panorama. Couldn't imagine doing that in a 4 or 6cyl and still get that same feeling, thats for sure!

Hellyer gorge in Tassie!! Targa goes through it.

A quick run in one direction to check the road (I've seen too many people get caught out on slippery patches) Then flat out in the other direction:

Best in a lighter car with plenty of power the Escort was great but hope to get the BA GT down there one day.

For a day run with a picnic lunch....Meet at McGrath Macca's (Windsor), up the Putty rd, through Broke (stop at Dr Jurds Jungle Juice) back down the Old Pathetic Hwy...home.

Mid North coast for a weekend run..Thunderbolts Way.

Now, a road to really hear your secondaries to open up...Cobar to Broken Hill.
Flat & straight, you can see for MILES ahead & behind.
Then onto Silverton for a Mad Max 2 movie location site seeing, then topped off by a sunset camel ride.

Victoria. Reeften & Black Spur.
We did this road leaving a sunny Melbourne day and it SNOWED on us driving through the spur.
Great Ocean road leaving Melbourne at 6am, not a car on the road.
That was an absolute hoot.
Just a couple of suggestions.

I didnt see it named, But the Ride from Eltham up thru to King Lake is very nice if you like it pretty tight and twisty...

Also the Road from Lilydale thru to MT Donna Buang is a great run and lovely on a Sunday morning, then stop at the tea rooms and pubs on the way back.

Gorge Rd and Old Norton Summit Rd for me here. The one I'm keen to try is the road that cuts through Kosciuszko National Park during summer. Went back home that way after going to Canberra earlier this year.

When i worked in Mclaren vale I used to drive that way to and from work prettymuch every day its probably why i used to use so much fuel lol. Honestly i havnt done the whole Gorge road too often seeing as i live about 5 mins from some pretty sweet roads. So if you are in the south of adelaide some good areas are Clarendon, Cherry Gardens, Scott Creek, Blewit Springs alot of which the Classic Adelaide rally use.

A nice little dirt road i used to use when i had my datto is Formby road in Cherry Gardens some nice corners and quite slippery, I can count off the top of my head atlest 15 people i know that have had a spin or little excursion on it lol
