driving home at about 2 p.m with the stereo cranking...(back when it was legal to do so) and my right rear wheel just fell straight off. i saw it through my back window, and though it better not roll into the channel so it dosent just go into the channel it does it in fine form. getting about 2 metres of air before doing so.i found 2 wheel nuts on the road and 2 in the grass(never found the locknut) so i phoned a mate to help me out and bring a trolley jack and while i was waiting,i decided to go rim fishing, (that sounds really dirty) jumped in and got it out of the channel, and later found out the idiot at Bob Jane in shepp threaded 3 wheel nuts, so it was a slow, scary drive home...

Mine probably aren't nearly as funny.
1st, some moron pulls apart my car, i put it back together, obviously the wrong way, as on the 2hr drive home to go to work, i blow a hose, which in turn blows the head gasket, and then to make it even more fun, it melts the pistons... tow truck, never got to work, got fired... had to buy a new car... 2nd, new car [well new to me, not by age though], front right hand tyre blows out, 1.30am after work, in the middle of nowhere, on my way home... fishy up the road for a bit, do a few circles, then smash into a tree, which decides it would like to become a part of my car, so it intrudes through the drivers side window, of which my throat was in its way... so after being pulled out of that my by my best mate [who's car i now own], i walked away with a torn ligaments in my ankle, internal bleeding, concussion, and a cut up neck... all in all, i liked the circle work the best... and then i realised... i really needed a ford... so did my mate... so he sold me the ED... which funnily enough now that i own it... keeps breaking something new every week... like being stuck on the side of the road for 4hrs after work because your lock off is stuffed, then havin it towed it away... poor baby :( |

I was driving my EA From Cairns to Port Douglas (About 50km of winding road) And all of a sudden I heard a thud then a loud scraping noise, My bumper bar had dropped out on one side and was hanging onto the road doing about 100 clicks.
Lucky It didn't go under the car. Cost me a new bumper...

I was driving for while just hearing a whining sound which got higher and lower in pitch when I was speeding up and slowing down. Only found out it was a seized pulley for my power steering when I was going around a round-about and the belt snapped without a sound (it had just worn through the belt from passing over the stationery belt pulley). The I had to start lugging the car around with no power steering! Did that for about a month before I put a new one on! Lol! Should've seen my arms! :eclipsee_

Going back to the 80s....
.....I had a '74 LTD, and was heading back from Tathra, over Brown Mountain. We stopped in Cooma (heading back to Canberra), to grab a drink and a bite. When we headed off again the steering felt really heavy.....I mean REALLY heavy (I'm a big guy so could still steer her). We got to Bredbo, I think It was, and could smell something burning. I looked in the rear view and saw smoke billowing behind us. We managed to pull into a little spot in the town and saw a black trail up the road, which came from underneath. Smoke poured out from under the bonnet, and after carefully lifting it, saw that the power steering pump was on fire....literally. I got the fire out without any other damage and muscled it home. It seems the bearing(s) in the pump had seized.

Reading through some of these replies, glad to know I'm not the only one here who has lost a wheel! Talk about embarrassing, sitting in the middle of the intersection on 3 wheels while family friends, old mates from school, etc. pull up to see if they can help!

Blew out the sump gasket on the right hand side, squirting oil directly onto the right hand disc brake. First time i hit the brakes, the car pulled a 90 degree turn to the left. Lucky it headed straight into an open street.
The ea's throttle bracket came loose, so pulling the accelerator pulled the bracket and not the throttle. This happened on the way back from victoria at night around 100kms from tailem bend. lucky some strapping tape secured it and we got back on the go again. |

my biggest problem i have had was when i went on a camping trip to Mt. Gambia with a few mates. i was towing the trailer up there .. i pulled over coz i felt something weird .. and my back right hand tyre blew out. I coudln't feel it.
mates told me sparks were comin out lol. i needed a new tyre and we were 10 or so kays to the nearst town. my mate had a buckled rim and i had a very bald tyre. so i chose to take my chances with the bald tyre. come to a beaurepaires .. and i scored a brand spankin new pirelli for 40 bucks. other then that .. i'v only done 1 alternator and 1 top radiator hose, both were no hassle .. the alternator incident needed a tow home .. and i fixed the radiator hose the next day ... where it stayed the night in a holden car park where it would of felt at home. |

Ok,
Driving from darwin to katherine in my 84 camira the temp gauge didnt move but the motor siezed as the temp gauge was reading the temp of air, not coolant due to a cracked hose. :P Had a front tyre blow out coming from melb to bris. It ripped the guard off my little datto Had my ZK fairlane lose oil pressure on the way to brisy from melbourne. Wasnt happy at 3am but still made it, until we reached dubbe where the flange gasket melted and the car wouldnt start due to it sucking the exhaust gasses into the intake?? Had a drive belt go on my EF coming back from byron bay to brisbane. (PLEASE, I STRESS.. CARRY A SPARE) Ive seen my old mans XB have a wheel fall off... my fault though lol

I had my instrument panel sitting in the dash and not screwed in (Stupid Idea). It was fine like that on the way to work but when I took off from a roundabout it fell towards me and into the steering wheel spoke so I couldnt turn right. Was quite scary, I ended up going straight ahead through the roundabout although I was in the wrong lane and pulled over to screw it back in. :
More recently I was on a 200km trip with the EB fully loaded, my mum, brother and his gf and all our gear as we were to fly overseas the next morning. Was about 10kms into the trip when my clutch pedal broke off and was lying on the floor. Had to arrange for Dad to bring his car so we could take that instead and his mate to help tow the EB home again.

I have had four:
1: Dodgy front pump seal. blew 30k from home. warranty job, but still had to get a tow. 2: Trans cooler, coolant went pink, trans fluid went white-ish, and a new radiator fitted. 3: S1 Solenoid. lost 3rd and 4th when car got hot. tow home (from dalby, to warwick). I also think I burnt out the C4 clutch (for engine braking in 1st-3rd). 4: S2 Solenoid. Lost 2nd and 3rd. That was in town though... and only having 1st and 4th isnt that bad in an EF. 4.5 (hardly counts, but): Passenger electric window. I left a car at a mates, and he borrows it, runs it dry, and forgets that my passenger window doesnt wind up. Im hoping that after i fix 4.5, there will be no more problems. (Car has done 330,000, so im probably going ok here) cya Ben |

Was doing about 100 klics one in the wagon and both back wheels locked up . Whole car did 2 / 360s and finally stopped still running . No traffic , got out and looked in my shorts first for any deposits. Then looked under car . Could see starter motor hanging down by positive lead with no bolt tabs present . Thought **** . Anyway unbolted lead from batt. termial whilst car still running . Proceeded to drive towards home about 20 kms away . Bang, bang clonk, clonk and could only do 5 km per hour . Checked universal joint at rear , okay . Checked front , present but not complete . Missining 2 cups . Preceeded to have a nervous breakdown . Quick belt with claw hammer and forward motion was better . Long crawl home only to find tranmission bellhousing and body were all cracked and ring gear was warped . Tailshaft cracked . But the 9 1nch diff is still going strong today . The auto was near new at the time with stage 2 shift kit and 2500 histall . Have now early c 10 with 2700 stall and heavy duty uni s . Timbo

Not too much dramas but got the heart rate going, A mate and i where doing a road trip from adelaide to melb didn,t think my te cortina would make the trip as it a vaccum leak somewhere that i had to put it netural ,brake and accelerate all at the same time just to stop the car so i asked if i could borrow the olds xb futura don,t no what was better the xb floated all the way, any way we were doing about 110k,s when an oncomming truck went past and the bonnet flew up and couldn,t see shit had to look thru the gap just above the dash and pull over and put it back down i couldn,t get anymore left on the next truck

Driving between Margaret River and Augusta here in WA in my 87 XF Fairmont Ghia, Alternator belt decided to part company with its pullys.
Seeing the digital dash fade out, then headlights, while travelling 110km/hr in a rural area is no fun... neither is replacing it by the light of the full moon... It was interesting to note though that while all my electric seemed to die, the engine was still able to run enough for me to drive a little while and pull over... In the AU, had my rear right tyre explode doing 100km/hr on the freeway. Nothing quite as fun as sliding diagonally down a road and looking at the "holy ****" looks on the drivers faces coming towards you/driving next to you at the time :P |

Well my EL has been good thus far.
One story from my previous EA was funny, not at the time though and it could of happened to any car I guess. Stay with me its kinda funny. I was cruising along the Calder, came p behind this guy towing a boat. Next thing I know some metal bloody thing comes flying out the back, hits the road, then smacks straight into my car. Not knowing WTF happened at the time, I stopped to see what was wrong, nothing was showing on the dash. Next thing you know, crap loads of oil was ****ing out of the sump, whatever it was pierced a hole about the size of a 20 cent coin. I was furious at this stage, I was 10mins from home said I said fook it, I started her up and hammered along the freeway and took the Sunbury exit. Going around the round about, I forgot all about the oil and proceeded to drift 1/2 way around (LOL looking back) I semi lost it and then straighened up and keep going. Next thing I know Mr Plod was 500m up from the round about in an undercover XR8 (BA was new at this stage). He pulled me over, gave me a lecture and almost gave me a neg driving charge until I showed him what was wrong. He told me I couldn't drive anymore (only 5 mins from home now). Gave me a nice comment about the car and left. So then I had to get a bloody tow truck for 5 mins of work, and the bastard still charged me full price. I was fuming, and all because I went to the damn Myer Boxing Day Sale to save $100 on a stereo...LOL Thanks for listening to my story : And I never got the bastards rego!

lost gears in a Ford Escort once after driving down a really bumpy dirt road to check out the beach (Dudly near Newcastle). I managed (somehow) to drive back home in 2nd. Turned out it was a big nylon screw clamp that had worked loose. I bought a spanner big enough to fit it and tightened it up when I got home.
I also broke a clutch cable on a motorbike and rode it home with no clutch. The hassle was stopping at lights and stop signs etc. I went around them - lol. |

in the XF the gear stick came out many times, sometimes a 700k's from home and sometimes right in the driveway. no big deal though, just a pain in the *** messing around puting it back in. we eventualy bolted it on.
once in the AU going around 120km, the car shut down completly, motor and electronics :S |

My old VR commodore. After being on the road for a while, pulling up to a set of lights just after it had rained, had a massive (unexplainable) lockup on the front left, then saw a mountain of (again unexplainable) steam rising from the front left corner of the car.
Drove a little down the road and the temp guage shot up like a old man on viagra, pulled over to have a look. The unexplainable series of events ended up being the bottom radiator hose coming lose (bloody holden dealers, they are shite) and spraying coolant all infront of my left front tyre. And while I waited for more coolant, I got to watch about 10 different people **** themselves when they came to stop at the lights and locked up on my coolant. |
