I get embarrased, when going for an interivew, because my resume contains so little.

Only done work experience twice and labouring for 4 days. *sigh*

I sometimes wonder if they laugh about me, when I leave, because of how pathetic my work experience is.

Mine just has personal particulars, education history, employment history, and general interests/hobbies. Keep it simple as people don't want to read a novel.

Hopefully will get a good job next year after I finish my Diploma and can add that to my resume.

I've worked in my first job for nearly 5 years in March and can't wait till get out. They hired me on sight of my school reports.

I didn't even have an interview, I just had to sign some paperwork. Fine by me.

How can you tell if someone will fit in unless you give them a chance at an interview?

Remember how some people view themselves and how others view them can be quite different.

You need to see them in person to make your own decision.

4 days labouring and two work experiences. Luckily I was born with 100 years of previous experience now I have 600 years.

Put on your resume who and what you are. The jobs your are going for are not ones that need years of experience (unless you are very silly).
If the job is, for example, packer at supacheep or auto pro and you put down:

Car and motor sport enthusiest.
Computer forum member.
Former eagle scout.
Played football/cricket/basketball for a few years.

What this says to me is:
This person has reasionable people skills and must be at least a bit reliable, will actually understand what the stock he is packing is so he will notice if there is a mistake (e.g. coilovers for $1.25 is probably wrong) and can drive a computer with a keyboard rather than a game controller.
In other words BIG TICKS.

Provided you look presentable and answer the question "why do you want to work here?" with something other than "I just want a job I don't care where" your are probably going to be ok.

P.S. tell the truth. e.g. Don't say you are an avid V8SC enthusiest if you are not because when the interveiwer wants to talk about just what a tool Kelly is and you have no idea he will assume you are lying about everything and you are dead.

I was told not to put your hobbies in, it shows your interest in other things and may not have full attention on your career, example to this would be required to work overtime or weekends or travel. Depending on your hobby, the company may see it as an iinconveniance to them and or you. I know it goes back to what this thread was started on...Political correctness, God you just cannot have a life if it iin any way interferes with work. Some of my points have also come from a corperate HR friend.


I used to wack to gether a bit of crap and chuck it to my boss to be as a formality only, because they knew what I could do and there for no need to impress but now I am trying to break away into an unknown world its a new ball game.
The whole thing is a skill in its self.

Too true and its the ones who show they have at least made the effort that get there. Use the skills you have as your strenghts, computer skills internet research and build a killer resume even with little work experiance. Put the effort in and it will show.

You Guys Post this , All While 1/2 of us are Looking for Work , Im Searching Through Seek.com.au and Jobsearch.gov.au and I Can Find Nothing that i could seriously see myself doing ,

Wanting to Move into the Automotive/Retail/Customer Service Area , But I Dont want to Work for Autobarn/Repco if you Know what i mean ...

IMO, hobbies and interests give me one of the best pictures of who a person is so I pay particular attention to them. Should they come up, it can be a way to establish common ground and can influence the whole tone of your interview. No one will discount you because your hobbies are different to theirs, as GT290 mentioned, don't let hobbies appear to run you life though.

ACT & WA are about the most starved areas for candidates at the moment. If you want work, you'll get it in one of those. If your career has had it, try NT.

I do agree with you, But I got told this through one of them HR gurus who sit on panels and do phone interviews. I think that the small company emplyee is probably great and do have a more down to earth aproach but the big corperate companies have screening processes and the first is the employment agent such as Hay and tphuman and so on. I know what you mean and there was a time when I would be interveiwed and the deal was done with a hand shake and a bit of small chat to close off. now I can not believe what you got to go through to get a job on the caol. There are so many criterias to pass before you even get to the first interview.

Question, How many people omn here have tried and suceeded or not or are currently trying to get a job in the coal, oh and may have no experiance or limited.

So what is the point of a resume or CV or whatever? I suggest it is to:

1) See if the candidate has relevant qualifications
2) See if they have experience or if they have the foundations that could be built on if they were the right person.

right, so bearing that in mind isn't the section "Interests" the part where someone migh put hobbies "Pig hunting and satanism" or "tree hugging and attending PETA meetings.

So aren't CV's meeting both the formal and the non-PC criteria? Or has no one else here ever put an "interests" section?!?!?!?!?!

Yes mate I have. I will say this though, its never been discussed at an interview, Never I think what needs to be said here is there is a difference between larger corperate to smaller companies that do there own employing and screening
I did mention the reason it may not be good in some cases not to mention hobbies for instance, " Joe I need you to work back today, or on the weekend" Joe say ahh gee I would but I got that PETA meeting to go to then I got go out and hug a bloody tree.
More so though if the job intailed a roster out bush it might send the signal that you are not commited here due to your passion for tree hugging. just how these employment agenies work.
When your resume and cover letter is your selling tool and some one in the know tells you what is and what not. I take their sadvice becuase they know.sadive because it is. I agree here with you guys.

Don't know, I was one of 5 Sales Managers with a billion dollar company at the time - I still liked it personal.

I to use call up the drilling comany for a job and talk one on one with the drill forman , but now days to get on the mines with big companies you have to go through the agents and its a process. Usually the job will describe the competencies you need to forfull. I have herd of guys sending in a resume that had all the experiance including my self that did not cover any of the competencies out lined in the add. They get trashed. Computer generated resumes up load via the net such as seek, if you don't have it worded using buzz words and things that will stand out like for a computer generated search you will not get noticed. tough but true. Hence why it is an art, skill what ever you want to call it. I have been learning so much about this the last few days and still feel that I struggle. You really got to do your home work.

I like this thread only because I have been heavily involved in this the last week tendering for an underground trainer position. I think this thread has come up with some helpfull stuff for all types of people looking for work I hope.

Tailor each resume and cover letter to the company to which you are seeking employment. Research as much as you can. For big companies, this is easy, open another browser and google search for their website. Read their mission statement, read between the lines to discover the organisations values and attempt to get a feel for what their main focus really is. Google search the company name to see if they come up in any other searches, you may find what other people have to say about dealing with them. For smaller businesses it is about asking people you know what they know of them as well as attempting the internet searches.

The reason this is important is because when you know a little more about the company you can decide if you think you would like to work their. It means your letter and resume will contain the most relevant things to show you are a suitable candidate.

My resume that got me my current job had:
name
photo
age (which currently, for me in retail, is important because the buggers can get away with paying me 90% of the 'adult' wage because I am 20)
basic education outline
licences/certificates etc
skills (ie those gained from other jobs)
brief summary of my volunteer/charity work and a few other interests
3 'referees' contact details (bloody biased, that's why i picked them ) a manager from a previous job, a teacher at uni and the principal from my high school (yeah i havent been there for 4 years, but she liked me and i still have ties to the school)

All up 3 pages.

My opinion on the main discussion:
Either way you go there will be some companies that cast your resume aside because you either put your photo in or you didnt, or your age in, or not.

Whatever you are comfortable with I think.

Many large corporates, and some smaller companies as well do not allow refrences to be given, either verbally or in writing, due to liablity issues - all they they might be able to say is 'Joe Bloggs was employed by us from xxxx to xxxx', in effect a statement of service. Other companies may not allow managers to give refrences for current employees, once people resign a refrence can be given.

interesting thread, as im trying to look for work at the moment too.

ive just redone my resume and got everything up to date, and have had a few interviews, but its hard to gauge wether they are interested or not.

the trouble is, im running out of potential employers in wagga for what i do(graphic/web design), and the jobs are few and far between so i may have to look elsewhere if things dont change (anyone looking for a graphic/web designer ;) )

my brother got me onto this site that had some good advice and a decent pdf document that details what to do in an interview, how to do your resume and all that jazz..... may help some of the guys looking for work
(i personally found it too over the top but anyway)
