We just need the government to grow some balls!!
Not with Gillard at the helm A pity its such a seriuos issue not just for car manufacturing either

I try to buy as much Aussie made as much as possible but not everyone sees the big picture

Those 2 big supermarket chains and their main companies with the home brands will be the end of everything made in Australia

Curious (probably already covered) but when the government tipped in for the new engine plant,
didn't Toyota say it would result in another 300 jobs?
I know the engine plant doesn't come on line until later thsi year but will those 300 jobs still go ahead?

Ford said that their $103 million upgrade in 2014 will also increase jobs by 300, an interesting comment...

My apologies, but I haven't seen reference to the 300 extra jobs at Ford. Any chance you've got a link for that?

It is there but not what I was hoping for:

The $103 million investment effectively involves the direct employment of over 300 people during the design and engineering stages of this project and the significant flow-on effects for investment and for jobs across the supply chain.

“This means an extension of the Falcon and the Territory through to 2016 and this I believe is the first time that we’ve seen a period of discussion of engagement out to those levels of time.”
Some promising news:

Toyota Oz ‘planning for 2017 local model’
Link
TOYOTA has already started planning for a next-generation car to be built at the troubled Altona factory in Victoria from 2017, even though local manufacturing operations are only locked for the five-year life of the current-generation Camry that arrived in showrooms less than a month ago.

And while the company says it is not expecting government handouts to help it through its current production slump that has prompted it to announce plans to cut 350 of its 3350 workers at Altona, the Australian arm of the Japanese giant has made it clear that a local Toyota-government “partnership” will be sought to help convince Toyota Motor Corporation (TMC) head office in Japan to stick with its Australian manufacturing operation for the future model.

Engineers and designers to get the car into production, not production line workers.

Engineers and designers are usually contracted to a particular model during its development, and then they are let go at the end of the contract.

Toyota's job cuts had to happen, they have dropped a lot of exports, mostly due to the higher aussie dollar, and they can't carry so many extra workers.

A lot of dumb journos saying the government should have "bailed" them out to save jobs, but the simple fact is they couldn't have, cause whats the point of having so many extra workers who have nothing to do, its just wasting money.

At least Fords money is going towards a new model upgrade, Toyota have already put theirs into production.

The worst part is that the job losses will be involuntarily, the first time I have heard of an auto manufacturer doing this, not including Mitsu shutting of course. Why would they rather keep people who don't want to be there rather than letting the people go who want to leave. They would have no trouble getting enough people who want a package to leave.

Having a read of the text of President Obama's latest 'State of the Union' speech is very interesting, in light of the manufacturing discussion going on in the forums for some months now:

http://www.usatoday.com/news/washing...ipt/52780694/1

Note he is sounding policy in a direction of bringing enterprise and jobs back to USA manufacturing, with a regulatory slant. By singling out China repeatedly we can see the currency wars begin to escalate into trade wars; any student of 1930's history knows where that leads...

The thing is, China do import a lot as well and as the Communist govt keep pegging their currency so low, it is starting to bite domestically there from an inflationary perspective. They can't keep that up forever as their exports continue to rise.

Interesting next 5-10 yrs, that's for sure.
