I think is was designed by Ford with some input from Honda. The rough castings were made by Honda, the final machining was done by Ford back in Aust.

The 48/215 wasn't a "Chev"...it was designed by Holden, along with GM head office in the USA, as any completely new model back then would have done.

Come down to it, there's no such thing as a "100% dinky di Aussie car"...dig around your FG Falcon or VE Commodore and you'll find plenty of bits made overseas, but when push comes to shove, they're both the product of an American company.

Valiants would come close, once they stopped using American designs. The VH was fully Australian as the six cylinder hemi engine wasn't used in Yank stuff. The slant six in earlier Valiants was used overseas however.
All Ford sixes and eights until recent years were either identical to or based on Yank engines.

Probably the most fully Australian engines would be the Holden V8's like the 253 and 308. You'd have to add in the good old red six cylinder motor as well.

yeah i think the vh val had the most australian content of the time.this is why the e38 only got the aussie made 3 speed because no aussie manufacturer made a 4 speed.they had very good 4 speeds in the usa but they refused to use them because they wanted the most australian race car to race at bathurst etc.a knoble thing to do but the public didnt gave a rats.

E series has quite a few parts from Ford Mexico in them. Brake light switch, cruise control module, heater tap, etc.

Honda just did the castings until Ford's aluminium casting plant was up and running a year or 2 later.

Truth... No car. All "Australian" cars have been a rip off of Mustangs, Chevys, Opels and Vauxhalls. Now the most successful "Australian" car comes from Korea. Hard truth.

First Aussie car would be the Tarrant. But I would put the XA as the best known. Yea, a few styling cues from the US but a real Aussie.

Wasn't the "Blackwood project" all Australian ? , pretty sure everything on that was designed here in Australia except for the engines which were carried over from the previous model.

The Blackwood project was the XD Falcon but that had a lot of Ford Granada ideas into it from Europe with the Aussie X/Flow head on the the US designed block. The XA Ford would be the !st Falcon with mainly Aussie input.

I may be mistaken, and I'm happy to be proven wrong but I read an article that was posted on here recently, that goes into detail where the design for the XA came from. I tried to locate it and link to it, but I couldn't find it.

The summary was that an Australian design team flew over to the US to work with US designers on the new XA Falcon. The Australian team successfully rejected the American design and was told to provide a design within a certain number of months, which is what they did.

If that's true, then although it incorprorates attributes that were driven by US design - the XA Falcon was designed by Australians, produced in Australia and thus in my mind: is the REAL Australian car!
I found the supposed '68 Maverick images and a bit of info here:

http://www.aus-ford-uk.co.uk/html/st...-_bonnets.html

It's far from conclusive and I'm also happy to be proven wrong that it is what it says.

The images appear to have the 1968 date in evidence of what is a full scale clay model but images aren't clear enough to establish if it says Maverick or Falcon anywhere.

The author of aus-ford-uk site may be able to clarify where he got the image and info.

As I said when I posted the image I was gutted to learn that the XA may not have been as Aussie as we thought. Did we have it pushed on us by Dearborn after they rejected it as the Maverick? Another $ saving exercise perhaps. Or was it a Ford Aust/U.S. co-design as reported and therefore attributing the XA to the '68 Maverick concept may have been a rouse to help hide its true purpose?

Certainly when one looks at the Maverick (predominantly a two-door for the South American and Canadian markets) from this era it bears absolutely no resemblance to the '68 concept. However, it's interesting to note that it (the Maverick) evolved from the early U.S. Falcon as did the Mustang and our Falcons. This platform certainly spawned many a Ford for markets all around the world.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ford_Ma...North_America)

Whatever the true story, I think it's a case of either "don't tell me God, Santa, Jedediah Springfield and the XA aren't real" or "I know it ain't so but I can't deal with it". For me it's the latter. I guess the xk to xc Falcons are yank 'born' to a point but we made them our own and in doing so made them better. When we got the P41 from the Yanks in WWII we made it our own, toughened it up, rearmed it and managed to defend PNG with it at a crucial time. Birtles took the Bean and crisscrossed Australia with it after a few Aussie touches and as a result, drove into legend. Pay homage to it at the NMA when you're next in Canberra.

http://www.nma.gov.au/collections/hi...owner_bean_car

An interesting thread this one overall with many a tangent being explored.

So were the 6cyl Hemi engines in them. I could be wrong but the VH on Aussie Valiant’s are unique to Australia only.

Hi. Is that the same Elfin cars that used to be in braeside (Vic) and is now in Centre rd Clayton (Vic) (Next door to HSV) And the holden connection goes deeper than the motors with the streamliner having a big bit of its design work by Mike Simcoe who played a big part in the last of the monaros
