Terry Pratchett summed up well...........

"The Axiom, 'an innocent man has nothing to fear from the Police', is currently under review by the Axiom review board"

FFS even a paintball gun needs to be registered and in a locked and bolted down safe.
Think about it , the majority of domestic sieges involve a emotionally unbalanced fella that may or not be a registered gun owner . Nine times out of ten he is not a professional criminal who has never indulged in serious crime but may have a criminal record or some past contact with law enforcement which gives the attending officers some sort of idea of what they are dealing with .
Having said that ,imagine if semi auto rifles were freely available ( or worse a pump ) to purchase over the counter to anyone that could prove they at the time were legally able to buy one . Of course it doesn't rule out someone possessing an illegal weapon but it certainly cuts down the odds .
The argument of the right to bare arms for home protection is up there with climate change . Only the pessimists are believers , the rest of us get on with life .

There is also the worrying fact that a large proportion of the general public see no point in modifying cars at all, which is why hoon laws and similar restrictions just fly through so easily.

I don't want this to descend into a "guns are evil" thing. The link I was trying to make about the introduction of gun laws should have been obvious...law abiding owners of "an object" went to bed one night and they had a legally owned item, and the next day they had to turn up and hand in their now-illegal object because the government decided they couldn't be trusted with it anymore. They hadn't broken the law, the PM at the time (Howard) said to his cabinet in discussions that "We are about to upset many law abiding owners who have never and will never break the law"...but they still passed laws restricting everyone from owning that type of object, when it was only an extremely tiny number of owners who ever did anything wrong.

As with hoon laws, there was also the fact that those intent on breaking the laws would never comply with them anyway, so hundreds of thousands of law abiding owners destroy and get rid of their now-illegal property, while those who didn't care about the laws and who we should be worried about just ignored the law and kept their "items".
This is what we see with hoon laws...every time the cops have a proud segment on the TV news or in the local paper showing them confiscating "hoons cars" you don't see nicely modded expensive vehicles, or even the stereotypical WRX or Skyline...you see rustbuckets and ratty old family cars.
The "genuine" modifier has had to pay for the misdeeds of a small minority...again, as with the gun laws, because they are the really visible ones who the authorities know will probably do their best to obey the law anyway and are a soft target that can easily make the government look like they're "doing something about the problem"....

Now, leaving debates about guns out of it and purely considering the way the laws affected people who hadn't done anything wrong, can you see where I'm going with this?
Yes I do , but as I said if you have a LEGALLY modified car and drive as most of the enthusiasts on here advocate you shouldn't have a drama . Everyone has at some point and yourself owning a bike would have fallen under the hoon classification at some point in their lives . It's entirely up to you whether you get caught or not and that's where common sense comes in .
P.S my first traffic infringement was undue noise due to manner of operation in 1983 on a sunday morning entering the sth east freeway . they didn't catch up to me until after Stanley st exit . No traffic around 7 am , Mr plod asks what's that extra tank filler in the tray ( twin tanks ) so things haven't changed much !
OOPS , left myself open there , yes today that would have possibly fallen under the confiscation laws , however as I pulled up and got out of the car with a O.K you got me no probs , I MAY have been shown some leniency . Then again I might have been shot as that's a big no no in the states . Stay in the car until told to get out in case your armed . Thankfully we don't have that issue here at present .

I was mainly making the point that one day, if they so chose, they could decide that controlling hoons is all a bit hard, and simply make all modified cars illegal and take them off the road, not matter how "legal" they are.

I couldn't agree more 2011G6E. And the way governments both state & federal change the laws under the guise of protecting us all, it's entirely possible.

Police officers on duty should only be fining, arresting or charging people who break the law, that's their job. However, I find that all Police forces in Australia have become heavily reactive instead of proactive. You can't prevent crime after it's happened.

RBT's are reactive, the drunk driver has already driven an unknown distance and threatened the lives of X amount of people. Speed traps are reactive because the driver has sped over X distance endangering X lives. Searching people's cars for drugs, the drugs have already been made or imported, earned drug dealers X amount of cash and made X people high.

Whilst it's still good to have RBT's and to nab speeding drivers and drug dealers etc, I think Governments need to focus A LOT more on being proactive to prevent crime.

Then again, being proactive to stop crime would cost more money and earn the Governments less....

Crime, and fighting it, costs the community and govt far more than you think and it would be far cheaper to prevent all crime if you could.

A mix of prevention and enforcement is what we already have and what works

Our school education system needs lots more $ spent on it because the better educated your community the less crime and related issues you'll have

I agree that the mixture of prevention and enforcement that we use works pretty well!
So really there is no real need to have all these new stringent laws introduced. While the system works ok and the laws are already in place to be utilised there is no need for quotas and less tolerance.

Less tolerance translates to: You now have less leeway for making mistakes and you must now do what we say or you will be punished for it!

The better education side is where we should be heading because it provides much better opportunities for people to live a prosperous life without resorting to crime.

As an aside; Canada has just as many guns as the USA but they don't go around killing each other with them like Americans do.
I suppose the short answer is to restrict the guns but it isn't the long term answer! Its a social attitude problem not a gun problem and I don't think it has made a lot of difference in Australia because like Canada we didn't have a problem with lots of whackos with a propensity to kill.

Making laws harsher is not the answer to the problems faced on our roads either, its about better education, training and attitude adjustment. If people want to do it rather than being forced to do it you get a better result every time. (but much less money lol!)

Where do you get your figures for gun ownership from?

Even in countries with high levels of driver education there's still an enforcement component. It's always necessary because some will push the boundaries.

plus the cost to govt here of providing that education would be unfathomable considering the raft of other responsibilities they have. It's so easy to say that the government should do this but where's the personal responsibility then?

Driver education goes a long way towards generating personal responsibility..

I believe that all excessive force will do is cause motorists to drive in a manner that is just good enough to not get booked. Everything that is not adequately policed is considered irrelevant. That makes the road a far more dangerous place.

I believe this is true. Witnessed a car driving on the wrong side of the road today. Even turned out of a T intersection and kept going on the wrong side for as far as I could see. I was on foot at the time, and luckily no other cars were around.

There's a few getting around out here and I did hear (also about a couple of Audis) police asking serious questions about the daytime running light LED strips and whether they were "legal".

Ian Stewart is just paying for his own policies of 'take no prisoners' and 'fill your quotas'. It will cause him no end of heartache soon. Now the bloke admits he breaches the traffic act. Its all downhill from here for him.

But now do we need them writing us a ticket for 1 or 2klms over the speed limit or for leaving our windows down 6mm and locked up, probably with an alarm and immobaliser on, being the wrong distance following another vehicle, geez, ever seen the traffic on a morning and an afternoon...

I suspect that's the offence terminology and not the full story of what happened

a bit like a ticket for neg driving doesn't explain what happended but is what the offence is called

the full story will be on the officers copy of the ticket and would have been discussed with the rider involved

That is fxxxxxg ridiculous !!! So, you cann't take your foot of the foot rest to put it on the ground when stopped at the lights????? Can you take your hand of the grips to adjust your visor or scratch your nose ?? Harley riders with the new touch screens won't be able to use them !!! This is revenue raising!!!!

It's only while moving that both feet must remain on the pegs.

I saw on Facebook some high ranking copper said on Twitter its fine to stretch your leg, and he does it himself all the time.
It's more a fine for when people are being larrikins. So either over zealous copper, or we're not getting the whole story. Or both.

And cops will just rewrite the ticket.

not sure if serious

blowing through a level crossing gets people killed all the time

the police were right to fine you (if this is not a joke post)
