Lots of people around talking about diff and auto problems being needed to be addressed under warranty.
If you get one, I'd suggest an extended warranty (read the fine print though) because bits like autos and such would have to cost heaps more than than for the AU. GK

http://www.fordforums.com.au/showthread.php?t=689 edit: and my own experiences from a BA (XR6) that I have the use of:- noisy inside - definitely not enough sound padding clunk from the rear (the car, not me!) - annoying but Ford can't find it drivers side low beam globe consistently blows - Ford can't find the prob rear drivers side door never closes on the first attempt. To my knowledge there have been no serious problems - it's done just over 40,000kms. |

Also, BA's tend to use more fuel than AU's, gas or petrol. |

Best bet for under $5000 IMO would be an 5spd N14 Pulsar Q they have the SR20DE engine same as a non turbo silvia. They look good and go well especially with minor mods. My big sis owns one and I use to borrow it all the time before I bought my own car.

ba are good in a way and not good. my mums when u put it into reverse sounds like theres 2x12's in the trunk u get this massive thud. And it goes pretty crap and drinks fuel like no tommorow. only thing i like is the dvd system and the auto. For the petrol your better of buying a Boss mate or even a turbo and have so much more satisfaction with almost the same consumption its a joke how it works. Our ba xr8 used to get about 500kms a tank and punching it to burnouts, the six is lucky to get near that figure and drive it like a grannny.

I have a mk I BA, and only problem I had were handbrake adjustment and machining of the brake discs. Apart from that, it hasn't missed a beat or let me down, very happy with the car.

^^^^ Thats golden, reminds me of my lunch breaks and free lessons at school;) In refrence to the dedicated gas falcons, i use to work as a mechanic at a council and we had heaps of them, only the mk1 were out when i worked there but it seemed like they had never ending problems with them Here is some i can remember - Gas gauge constantly stuffing up (from memory if you take out fuse no. 27 and 29 it would reset it and be ok but this would only work a couple of times then they would just constantly read incorrectly regardless of what you did) - they would backfire and stall, and a few times blow the airbox to pieces - a couple of them would internally leak in the radiator between trans fluid and coolant and cause the coolant to go an oily reddy brown and froth up inside the header tank - the o-ring on the back of the water pump would leak but i think that is a common ba problem, as it happened to our petrol and gas falcons. Noticible by a white water stain sprayed directly behind the pump on the manifold cover and surrounding area - Factory falcon brake shudder;) - And some had very notchy steering racks but not many That is all i can remember, and keep in mind these are only my experiences of the ba mk1, since i left the council i haven't had much to do with the ba's so cant tell ya much more than that. I did like the sequential shift tho but it does loose its novelty factor after a while. But after all that they still feel like a nice car to drive however the steering feels a lot heavier than the au. Just my opinions and experiances Benny Mac

ive read this thread again...
if you are worried about ecomony and running costs, a BA egas is NOT the answer... go find a pulsar or an excel owned by an elderly couple or something, it will no doubt be LOW kays, and WELL looked after. that is, if you want reliability and economy. if you want "go fast" go find a SSS pulsar or something. plenty of cheap aftermarket ad ons for them.. i dont know what you are looking for, so thats the best i can give.

pulsar Q's do not have an SR20DE.. they are a 1.6L i think.. the SSS have the 2 litre...
i've seen a much better sigma then that... and doing much better skids... Back on topic... good luck with the BA.. i can't add anything worthwhile as i don't have first hand knowledge...good luck |

I currently dont have my car atm and iv had the chance to drive one these fuel economical cars. Anyway it costed $38 to fill at $1.14 and it was completely empty. Its a 06 hyundia getz and dam can it use fuel. You have to give it so many revs to get going and it drinks the petrol. I reckon fuel economy between the falcon and getz makes the tiny cars not worthwhile you get no space in them and they are embarrassing to drive. You need to give them so much revs juts to keep up with a normal 6cyl vehicle.

that wasnt crap talk , Sigma Turbos are a Nice , Little , 2.8 Lt (or 3.0 if your Lucky) Astron II , There UBER Quick and would run rings around a Stock Falcon Anyday ,
You Can also Pick Good Original ones up for about $3500 , RWC and Registration , Also , Garrett T-04 Turbos Use the Same Flange as the Original One , So its a straight bolton ! Looking Easy 200rwkw , That video was just what it could do in the end !! Daniel

If you are looking at selling the car because it is unreliable or something, then that's a pretty good reason. But, if you are looking at swapping a dual fuel AU for a BA LPG and it's for eceonomy reasons, you really need to make a list of what you have in the current car, and then what you want in a car, and you may find that the AU fulfills most of those things anyway. Economy on a BA EGas will be worse than the AU. Perhaps have a look at this thread: http://www.fordforums.com.au/showthread.php?t=78126 Oh, and just in case your engine is dead, you can get a lowish km one from the wreckers for around $500, and with a hoist, it's not too hard to change it over for the dead one (I'm thinking your cam install has had an adverse effect!?). I guess where I'm coming from is that a few years ago, I went through 5 cars in 4 years, and all it did was cost me money. I am still paying for that! I have now had my current cars for 3 and 2.5 years, and when I get sick of something, I just get a new set of wheels - it's like getting a whole new car, except you get to keep the "personality" of your current car (yes, all the squeaks and groans etc). Good luck whichever way you decide to go, but yours is one of the nicest series 1s on here - it would be a shame to get rid of it for something that you may actually end up being less happy with.

Simon did you still want me to check out that AU1 up here? I drove past yesterday but didn't see it out the front. I think at the end of the day no matter what car you have it costs you lots of money. Old = Repairs and always braking down Medium = Fuel and costs more money for the vehicle New = high cost services, higher cost insurance and a fat loan Either way you cant win with cars. A cheap car is like trying to find life on another planet.

i even practice on my L's with it and to say i'm lead footed is an understatment. it's a five speed manual and its revs out real quick in first. i got up to 100 in 3rd gear. it sounds like a lawn mower, the hubcaps fall off, and the dash board cracks but if it was kept in good condition then they are pretty reliable. the only problem we hav had for the past five years was spark plugs needed changing and the clutch needed a change. (most likely from me riding the clutch when i first started) I don't really like asian eco boxes but the xcel looks alot cleaner and neater then a festiva or barina.

ive been reccommended ford laser tx3 turbo AWD's.
very quick car, cheap on petrol as long as u stay out of boost(unlikely) i was looking at doing the same thing as you simon, but seriously its your choice, but when u add up all the prices including stamp duty, and the risk of buying something that will be older and probably unreliable, its not worth it. ive decided to keep my car and to work the head. but if u have to change, seriously look into the laser tx3's(good lil cars)
