Dare i say best bang for buck 2000 model volvo s60 T or s80. cops will leave you alone and they go decent for a volvo
Hard pressed to find a better kitted out car for that money - they start at 15k. If that fails 25k might get you a bmw e36 m3 or a e46 3 series of some sort.

My first car was a $250 1987 Mitsubishi Colt. Had that tricky 8 speed manual lol. Was an awesome car for the price, loved it heaps. Just bought a BA XT for $9450, love it to bits. I'm still 16 btw

A friend literally has a room full of trophies 1st, 2nd and 3rd places, best in class, fastest lap times from his B16-engined CRX. This thing was his road car that was raced in Victoria, NSW and South Australia and it would regularly scare cars with much bigger reputations. There is a white 1600cc Honda Civic sports sedan in Rothmans colors down here that will tear many a car a new belly button.

Firstly, what's the theory behind 18yr old girls not liking male passengers if they drive a Falcon or Commodore (oh, unless they've modified it) ? I didn't know landing heaps of face was important when I was 18. What is landing heaps of face? ...and lastly, which McDonalds car park will you be at tonight? I want to land me some face. Peace out. |

I reckon as a young bloke you cant go past a ute. You can sleep on it, put your bike on it, move house with it (move out of home wink wink) they are practical, they look good and have a cool factor even if they are japanese. And the best thing is they hold their value really well. Get him into a late model turbo diesel 2WD hilux or Courier/ranger something like that. Something with decent tyres and brakes.
Lower it a bit (not a lot), tint the windows, comfy, economical, practical and they look cool. Good luck. |

Couple of examples
http://www.carpoint.com.au/used-car/...sn1873589.aspx http://www.carpoint.com.au/used-car/...sn5745312.aspx http://www.carpoint.com.au/used-car/...sn5569823.aspx Haven driven a 4WD 2.5TD I would probably lean toward the 3L TD but given he is a P plater and he isnt getting out of a V8 falcon like I did, the 2.5TD would be fine. |

A lot of people are bandying about this "reliable jap car" for $5000 idea like they grow on trees or something; I found it was hard to find anything in this price range that was in excellent condition, safe and less than 15 years old. $10000 is a nice sweet spot; I picked up mine for $10200. The extra $5000 is an investment, I promise because you will get so much more from the car. It's the difference between a 1995 model that's done 200,000 and a 2002 model that's done 90,000. Or 7 years extra service. Honda, Toyota, Mazda, they're the best if you look at the satifaction surveys. Let's get one thing straight about street cred; the only thing that really turns my head is a well sorted classic (or a modern classic). I couldn't care less about your rushed, plasticy WRX STi, your dirty, rough running clubsport or your lowered, pumped out EL with stuff hanging off it everywhere and a stupid, loose exhaust. I also hate when someone takes a car that everyone knows is crap (like a late 90's hyundai or proton) and tries to give it cred. I really respect cars where you can see the effort put in by the owner to making it look tasteful and well looked after. This could be a restored GT coupe, a concours MG or a subtley modified 350Z for example. Cars that are finished, complete, well looked after, not the usual P plater trashmobiles. So my advice to your son would be this - get a shopping trolley / whitegood / whatever like I did, pay $10,000, drive it into the ground, and save and research to customise a vehicle with true cred at you're own leisure. |

well how much will he use his car? If he doesnt drive 500+ kms a week like i do, fuel efficiency isnt much of a concern. I am only 18, i drive an old EA Fairmont Ghia, and depsite the plates, it is INVISABLE to the cops. A newer model, like an AU or BA Ghia would be a great buy. Fairlanes and LTDs are also very cheap now.
Its all about appreciating the car you have. I got my firt Datto Skyline for 950 dollars, sold a bunch of video game consoles to get it when i was 17 last year. Had it for about 5 months, bought an EA Falcon S, sent the two cars on their way and saved up 2,000 dollars of hard earned cash, at 8 dollars per hour at Pizza Hut, minus all the shitloads of fuel i had to spend on the 18l/100kms datsun and 14l/100kms Falcon S while delivering with them. I got a mint condition Silver EA Ghia Series 2, and i drive it to this day. I have had it for about 8 months now, and i take great care of it, i drove it 19,000 kms since getting it. If mummy and daddy would have gotten ME a 25k car, i would have got a Porsche 928 S or a V12 Jag XJS and i would have wrapped it into the nearest tree at 200 km/h the day i got it. Did your son earn his 25k at such a young age?
