I've never owned a new car despite being more than capable of buying one.
I like the thought of having a brand spanker but when warranty is not worth the paper it is written on, I'm not fussy with colours or options and the one I own now owes nothing I'm not in a great rush to get one. |

Love Hulk threads.. Lots of laughs that keep the Forum interesting. What's more he is polite and absorbs the abuse like a Queen-sized mattress.

Had a number of well maintained second hand cars that have never let me down. I take delivery of my first ever new car in June which is my XR8. Was hard for me to justify except it is the last one ever and I don't want a second hand performance car. Being debt free and cash in the bank to pay for it got it over the line.

I had real problem with this, thinking what gives you self confidence is doing something well, like your work, or doing a challenging sport well, like rock climbing, or achieving something like building a house. ( ok- I was jealous as all hell- given the only thing my old man ever gave me was a thick lip and clip over the ear). Anyways, this guy who got self confidence by driving a given BMW went into State Politics and was recently booted out after taking possession of a "gift" in nefarious circumstances.....

I know people who have bought new cars, I have never had anyone making smug comments towards me about their new car. Don't buy a new car, Hulk. I will feel like a peasant if you do and I will need to buy a new one to be a better person than you. |

All this talk about only buying second hand cars does make sense, but there still needs to be new car buyers. Otherwise how do cars become second hand? No I don't think we should buy to impress others though

These threads are like reading an episode of ACA / Today Tonight.
Next thread will be about how Hulk gets the better of Motor Finance Wizard while using a pay day loan as deposit. Go Hulk! |

Perhaps MrHulk you can trade your I6T in on a brand new $23,000 Kia Cerato. You will then have a brand new car! Bam! Yes, your mates may have better rides, more power etc. but can they beat a 7 year factory warranty? Surely there is bragging rights there! This gets you into the mix right?
But now I ask the question, " what would we do without your Friday threads Hulk? " Guess you joining up at a Kia forum will have mixed responses here. |

This is trolling at its finest.
Well played, sir. On topic: the Bank of International Settlements came out a couple of years ago and mentioned it was a goal to double the world's debt levels within a decade or so. I am sure your friends and self can contribute to this noble goal.

Its all about priorities in life, some people have no problem dropping 700 grand on a mortgage and shudder at the extra 8 grand to go from buying a 3 year old car to brand new.
We all have our own motivations and wants. I buy used and new, and I think personally used cars are pretty poor value in Australia. Maybe because motoring is so essential in this country that it keeps a floor price on used values. I would still happily buy used to save money though, but last few cars have been new (nothing fancy, normal family cars and my beautiful custom ordered bright red, heavy duty tow pack, ECOLPI column shift auto, LSD, 180,000km FGII ute). Top 5 reasons to buy a new car: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=y__87iOCLP0 I will likely buy a new Mondeo Titanium Ecoboost in the short to medium term future. But as much as I'm drooling over the new Mondeo, I know I'm going to miss my Fairmont. The trick is to work out a way to afford to keep both ...

Ironic that Hulk just bought a second hand Territory and now is 'asking' shouldn't we all buy new cars.
Sell the lot Hulk and replace them all with brand new. Imagine the bragging you could do at the gym then! Plus you could wash them one by one in front of the neighbours. They'd all turn Hulk green with envy. |

It's the weekend. Give me a classic, a Highway and a good bakery. Couldn't care if my neighbours were on fire.

Made the mistake of stopping into the first bakery I saw in Heathcote while rolling through to the AFF Nationals last year, their custard tart tasted like dish washing detergent. Driving through, big sign saying "BAKERY". Its a trap! |

Buying new largely stops doubting toms from picking apart your purchase.
For instance if i had a 50,000km territory and my neighbour drives in with a used bmw x5, on first impression and to the passer by he has won. But when he starts bragging and i say "how many km"??? Then he starts getting hot under the collar and mutters under his breath "200,000", i see gutter rash on his rims and a tear in his leather seat and then his bubble just pops. Like he just got dunked in the pool. New v new it becomes type of car dictates the win but used its not clear cut, condition becomes a huge factor. (New falcon beats a 7 year old merc with 162,000km) Last edited by HULK_I6T; 02-05-2015 at 01:25 PM. |

the vast majority of respondents don't give a toss, dont judge you for your purchase or compare you to themselves, wouldn't batter an eyelid if you drove a new falcon or an old merc. this proves your original premise false. While i concur, as evidenced through your original question that some people do care, surely they are in the minority. We love you hulk, dont try any harder... JP |

don't be too hasty.
over 1 million new cars are sold in australia every year. how many new car buyers have responded in this thread? i doubt you can draw any conclusions from the info in this thread regarding the reasons behind why people purchase new cars. if you think peer pressure, or society pressure, or just wanting to 'keep up with the jones' plays no part, then you are naive. whilst this thread may be a bit of a laugh, i don't think the idea behind it is as far fetched as what people think. |

I think Damo has hit the nail almost on the head.
Cars are the most affordable they have ever been in Australia. making them cheap (comparatively) in comparison to years ago. Coupled with significant housing price rises across large swathes of Australia the equity in ones home has increased such that adding a car loan to the mortgage is easy, makes car purchases more palatable to many. Anyone trying to keep up with the Jones' is on an expensive hiding to nothing, because BJR in turn are trying to keep up with 888.
