There seems to be a thought that the 42b is only the cash payments. The $950 payments make up 12b of the 42b being spent. The other 30b IS going into infrastructure, such as schools, local government, roads etc. so as far as I can see this package has both short term and long term components.

IF I recall correctly, the first package of 10.4b last year used either just over, or just under half the surplus, which I thought was about 21b.

We're probably going to get the very old, cracked and buckled concrete at our house replaced, including a new driveway. It will of course cost far more than $950, but the money on offer (if the package is approved in the Senate) will be a welcome help.

thats exactly what we are doing, ordered a concretor to start next week to redo ours. If 950 is approved it will be going towards that

Hmmm I might pay the ridicoulous rego for V8's if I got it ! Nice explanation using the dinner example MYYVSS ! This arguement will never end, as someone whom really needs it will always miss out and someone whom doesn't need it will get it. Where were all this handouts when I was working two jobs and studying full time to get my degree.

I've read on another forum that if you've changed your address (or bank account numbers if you received your return that way) you should contact the ATO to update the details.

Perhaps a better question is, will your spending increase after having recieved the grant or will it go towards easing the burden of expenses you would've spent on anyway?

I don't think my spending will increase.

Actually, all up they are looking at borrowing 200 billion over the next few years. That will cost 10 billion per year in interst, or $500 per person per year, or $1000 per worker per year.

No you will only get the Under 80k a yr if you put in a tax return for 07-08 other wise you miss out, you wont get the 950 for being a student either your parents will if they recieve the part A in family payments

Here's an idea, instead of giving every one $950... I'd be more than happy to see Rudd give it all to the bushfire appeal.
