One thing to consider is the woeful resale value these things have.
I saw a 2.5 year old one on graysonline.com with around 60K on it and it sold for $2.7K. Considering it was once 22K new that's a staggering 85% drop in value after 2.5 years. Makes fords resale value look respectable.

You may as well compare an AU Falcon to an FG An AU sedan with airbags only scores 3 starts making it 1 better than the old GW with no airbags http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QbVobsLvV7E

take a quick look on ebay or on red book at prices for an 09 GW and an 09 Falcon and you'll soon see what has a woeful resale value http://www.redbook.com.au/cars/resea...&Ridx=2&eapi=2 http://www.redbook.com.au/cars/resea...&Ridx=0&eapi=2

The AA have put a warning out to make sure we do not do any mechanical repairs on any Great Walls due to asbestos in gaskets. |

Surely if the existance of the asbestos in the gaskets had been disclosed, they would have failed the import conditions, wouldn't they?
Typical emerging economy saying what they have to say to get entry and then bad luck. They put our mechanics at risk (and I don't car how small, on a scale of awful cancers, mesothelioma wins, hands down)) let alone the people who manufacture and install the gaskets initially. GW shoud be forced to replace all gaskets containing asbestos at their cars in a safe environment or have their import licence cancelled. |

But weren't Aussie cars using asbestos in gaskets up until sometime in the nineties ?
What happens to them re servicing or wrecking ? How many Mechanics or Wreckers have been affected by Asbestos ? What about all of the buildings/houses that still contain Asbestos ?

Up till the mid 200's I think Chopped and one would presume the automotive industry would have procedures in place to handle asbestos components anyway?
If memory serves, an independent study was conducted and they found there wasn't much risk to mechanics and GW stopped importing asbestos gasket and offered free replacement. I thought the petrol engines where actually made by Mitsubishi still? the diesel is their own. X200 is an Isuzu Rodeo X240 uses a Toyota 4runner chassis, not sure about the body though? Some interesting ANCAP results - http://www.howsafeisyourcar.com.au/2...L-4cyl-Petrol/ http://www.howsafeisyourcar.com.au/2...-4cyl-TDiesel/ |

We do all the service work for the great walls in our area due to the distance to the great wall dealership which they are okay with. Just sent another back to the dealership to have a new power steering pump fitted as its leaking like a siv.
3rd time back for this one with only 11000km.... |

The Great Wall V240 on the other hand? 16.49/37. What did the Great Wall score in the offset crash test? 2.36/16. That's alarming. Surprisingly enough, the car performed perfectly in the side impact test (!) but the horrifying frontal crash test score can't be ignored. How do most crashes occur, anyway? We should also compare apples with apples. The AU ute gets a safety rating of 4 stars, and it can't achieve 5 stars anyway due to the lack of stability control and seatbelt reminder sound. As for the GW itself? My mum's cousin owned one, the tray was askew from factory. He upgraded to an early 2000s Mazda B-series.

I live on Mt Tamborine and sometimes get stuck behind cars struggling up the hill. But a few days ago I came up behind a small SUV and as soon as we got to the first incline on the way up, it slowed to a snails pace and continued to do so at every incline. I got up close to see what it was and the badge on the back said GREAT WALL. In eight years living uphere, I've never previously encountered such a gutless vehicle.

Guy on my crews X240 wagon is completely full of rust, the whole shell all the paints fading and the door and window seals are rotting, they may be a cheap car but still 20k+ for a car thats **** straight out of the showroom is just sad.
Forgot to add the car has electronic rust proofing and paint protection as well.... Last edited by Thornie; 05-02-2013 at 04:12 PM. |

My issue is they are bad now but what are they going to be like in 5 years, they are just a waste of resources and are going to be the cause of so much disposable rubbish. Some people are so obsessed with doing the right thing for our planet so to say but they buy disposable vehicles

I've had mine for a month now and racked up just over 8000km and so far its been a good thing, its a little under powered but GW have a free software package to fix the fuel/turbo mapping and the laggy power, and that will be done on its 15000km service by my local Ford dealer the Asbestos gaskets aren't really a problem unless your a mechanic who likes to lick eat or sniff gaskets or removes them with a wire brush, saying that mine were changed at its first (5000km) service As for the "you get what you pay for" line, I really do believe i got what i paid for unlike my mum who bought a 2010 V6 hilux work mate, she really got SFA for her $37000 Im happy with my GW it does exactly what i bought it for, Im that happy with the ute and the service from the Dealer that i actually bought a second car from them today, no its not another GW but a 2013 Focus ST in Tangerine

An update to this, I ended up buying a new run out LV TDCI Focus in 2011 and it fit my tools in it just fine, I just got rid of it a few months ago where its new owner also abuses it |
