I used to hate beer, but got to uni and that changed things quickly. Now I love it, I appreciate different types; I brought the Beer Bible and drink different types of beers depending on what I am eating. (oysters and stouts go very well together). I got a slab of carlton tonight for $38 bucks, will do me for a bit. Although they had a special, two slabs for $60; but I thought better of it..LOL

Used to hate beer and it was mixed stuff ahoy! So what made me start enjoying beer? My 1 year (woot) Year 12 reunion in 2003. After seeing so many morons who hadn't changed a bit, I just had to have a few. And tasted good too! I must admit, many people around me were drinking too, especially after I talked to them. Hmm.... |

I enjoy beers and will drink whichever is handed to me. Some IMHO are bloody aweful though, like the James Squire range. My trip to Italy got me hooked on Nastro Azzuro, but it tastes better out of the tap. If i arrive at a bar my choice will usually be either Carlton Fusion, Hahn Super Dry, Corona, or Jim Beam + Cola :P If i am out for dinner i'll usually buy a premium beer to go with a premium Steak!!

Can't see the attraction with Corona, apart from the perceived image. Tastes pretty watery and bland to me, especially without the lime. Officially turned off it for life after going to a bar in Mexico and some local boys jeering "Hey gringo, joo want some leeemon in jo Corona, haaahahaha". Its the equivalent of VB there, there are several far superior Mexican brews (like Dos Equis or more importantly Victoria). For my mind Crownies are overrated too considering the price, tasted far too familiar to Carlton Cold to me last time I cracked one.
I will always have a soft spot for Quad X Heavies, after sustaining me through many years of uni on a tight budget. I swear my group of mates kept the uni bar profitable... we're engineers, we have a reputation to uphold... Don't mind Carlton Draught either. Nowadays I like to expand my horizons and thus far I'm more partial to: Coopers Pale and Sparkling Ales James Squire offerings like Golden Ale (mmmmmMMMMMmmmmm amarillo), I.P.A (holy hops batman!), Pilsner Little Creatures Pale Ale (you can never have too much cascade hops), Bright Ale, Rogers' Beer and more recently Knappsteins lager, bottle looked a bit gay, but the beer was none too shabby at all. My favourite would be a toss up between LCPA or JSGA tho, just depends on mood. Not to mention home brew! kit and kilo or extract for now, not set up yet for all-grain :( Also keen to try Pilsner Urquell as I've only heard good things about it. Oh and BUNDY RUM!!

StAndArdAU...Squire beer is for a palate that appreciates flavour. You can't have one bottle and make a judgement. I'm an example of that.
You're drinking Corona, which has no body or flavour...you need to sample way, way more. I rememeber the first time I had Coopers Vintage...I thought it was like a spirit...now, it's like water to me. Can drink it easily. First time I had it, I thought it was disgusting. Now, I love it. Carlton Fusion, Hahn Super Dry and Corona are all fairly weak beers compared to other offerings out there...and Corona is overpriced. Good beer doesn't need lemon. That aside... My staple beer is La Trappe Dubbel (Koeingshoeven)...about 7%. There is also a Trippel, which is 8.5%, but the Dubbel has a much nicer flavour. More fruity. In the Trippel, the alcohol content kills the pleasantness for me. However, there are other beers with high alcohol contents that still retain many of the subtle flavours. La Trappe Dubbel is not easy to find, but for a trappist beer, is very, very cheap. $16 for four. I get mine from Vintage Cellars at Pinewood Shopping Centre (in Mount Waverley). Only place I know that stocks them around me. ubute has good taste...LCPA is a bloody good beer...good price, bloody nice and highly (re)-drinkable! Roger's Beer is ok for a mid-strength, but I preferred Cascade Amber Ale, which unfortunately isn't stocked at Danno's anymore. Crownies and Corona are marketed to look like prestige, top quality beers, but in reality, they're mass produced, use inferior products, and in the case of Crownies, laden with chemicals to speed up the brewing process. IF you want a no-BS beer, German lagers are fantastic. In Germany, by law, you must use pure ingredients, clean water, and NO chemicals. German lagers (Bitburger, and Lowenbrau) are inexpensive, readily available, and very good bang for buck. I tried a Duvel recently (Belgian Golden Ale)...7 bucks a 330ml bottle but didn't really enjoy it. Chimay is 8 bucks and while it was very nice, I think my La Trappe Dubbel at half the price is pretty bloody good. I am going to get some Rochefort 10 pretty soon....11th/12th best beer in the world on Beer Advocate. Costs like 10 bucks a bottle (330ml)...so I plan to enjoy it.

uranium_death, i was given two promotional cartons of the Squires beers, where each six pack consisted of six (it may have been three now i cant quite remember) different beers. so in fact i had multiple of each beer in total. i made it a point to only drink one 'flavour' in each sitting and to me each of them were not worth the bottles they came in.
Everyone is their own person and everyone has different tastes, hence why i placed an IMHO in front of my squires comment. Dont try to tell me which beers taste better than others. they only taste better to you. if im at the Tav i dont want to be 'appreciating' the beer i want to be drinking it, not reciting the German dictionary. As for real beers not needing lemon, do you sometimes season a roast chicken or steak to make it taste better? Real Steak shouldn't need seasoning :P Back on topic: i've had people try and talk me into drinking Becks a few times... found it very very bland.

Myself and about 6 mates spent a weekend in Coral Bay one Australia Day and consumed 10 cartons of Coronas. Got sick of the bottle tops everywhere and moved onto cans of Beam. Coronas' give me wicked headaches though if i get plastered on them, much worse than other beers.

Miller Genuine Draft (otherwise known as MGD) is my drop of choice at the moment, but Peroni is a close second. Extra Dry, Carlton Dry, Pure Blonde and Boags St George all get a mention too.
For non-beer, I'm usually enjoying the company of Mr Beam but that's very rarely.

Ahhh, MGD. It's like drinking a West End Draught, or VB, only American.
Drank plenty of those when working in America. They go down real easy after busting your gut for 8-10 hours in 40 degree temperatures in the hot Californian sun!

My favourite beer? 'Old speckled hen' - an english beer, can't find many places that actually stock it. And, it's about 25.99 a 6 pack, so i normally enjoy them in great moderation. More reasonably priced beers I enjoy are becks, heineken, stella artois, carlton draught (when im drunk or its icy cold), tooheys extra dry from time to time. If im driving and want a few lights, cant go past cascade premium light. |

When you buy Becks, Heineken or Stella, make sure you are getting the IMPORTED ones and NOT the Australian ones (under license), as there is a massive difference. The quality in the Australian brews drops tremendously, especially with the Stella. To keep your peepers open. Corona has been marketed effectively to appeal to people who want to appear "cool", while drinking a clearly inferior product. Sunlight isn't good for beer and fermentating I believe... Pulled this off Wikipedia (yeah...real good source I know :P) Quote:
Try a bloody Chimay, stouts (many differerent ones), Duvel, La Trappe...lemon will destroy these beers in a hurry...and these are beers that are rated as being pretty good across the world. This is not my opinion alone, but of many, many people. On the other hand, seasoned beer lovers (as well as the experts at BA) rate Corona very low for its lack of body, bad smell and terrible finish. And in response to "seasoning meat", I don't. I like to eat my meat without sauce. I get it cooked medium-rare, and relish the bloody juice that spills out. However, meat is not beer. When I get a roast beef, I get a roast beef. Whether I get it from Victoria or NSW doesn't make a bloody difference. A cow is a cow. When I get a beer, I choose Belgium because there is more care put into brewing (as well as knowledge, and at that, less ****) than many other places which make cosmopolitan BS beers that appeal to trendy tryhards. The ingredients and LACK OF chemicals used in these beers does giant, soft, smelly poos over many of the common selections brewed in the massive breweries which spend multitudes of money on advertising, meaning less can be spent on buying quality products, meaning the beer's quality is compromised. And take it easy, I wasn't having a personal dig. Jeez. Part of drinking beer is appreciating it. Appreciating the aromas, how it pours, drinkability, as well as finish are integral to the drinking process. If you don't appreciate your beer, you might as well just drink turpentine. On another note...I really like Beez Neez in summer. It's very light, pretty clean, and highly drinkable. Also not a bad price. I'm a huge fan of Grand Ridge Brewery. Their wheat beer is very good value, and very nice. They also do good stouts, a good pale ale (though LCPA is better) and their Yarra Valley Gold is also nice. One of the few Australian Breweries that actually care about brewing ahead of making squillions of dollars. Their philosophy on beer is fantastic. Just remembered...another well-liked beer is "Bush", but I heard the brewery went backrupt or something. ANybody know anything about it? It's a very popular beer, and has nothing to do with U.S. Presidents.
