Unhappy One problem to another

Hi all.

I Replaced the globe in the back of my instrument cluster because it blew a couple of months ago. I had half removed the cluster when I broke the lens. So I though **** it. I'll just buy another, cause it was stuffed anyway.

But when I replaced the lens, I accidentally knocked the tacho needle.
Now I done a search using several combinations (needle, tacho, cluster etc) but didn't come up with anything.

Now when I start the car, the tacho sits on about 250rpm, and with the car off, instead of sitting on zero, it sits hard against the bottom of the cluster (about 1cm below "0" on tacho).

How do I reset / calibrate it?

I tried moving it with my hand, but it doesn't matter where you move it, as soon as you start the car, it will jump right to the bottom, then move up to 250rpm again?

Help please, this is driving me nutters.... :

1. Take the cluster out of the dash and take the lens off (without breaking it).
2. You need to take the needle off - use a fork to pry it off.
3. Plug the cluster back in (Lens should still be off)
4. Start the car, give it a small rev until needle, which you should be holding in your left hand, starts to vibrate (OK, that bits a joke, but seriously, start the car and give it a blip on the throttle)
5. Turn the car off again (all the way off) and count to 10.
6. Reattach the needle at the zero mark.
7. Repeat step 4 & 5. Needle should be sitting on or close to 0 rpm. (if it's close, leave it - you'll get used to it, and it's hard to reattach it perfectly)
8. If you are happy after step 7, then unplug cluster.
9. Reassemble cluster lens etc and plug it all back in.

Note: If you're not happy after step 7, repeat steps 2 to 7 until the needle sits where you are happy with it.

Your other option is just to add 500rpm to whatever it's displaying. :-)

Cheers JC, your a lifesaver, I was not impressed with adding 500 to the mark lol. I only just figured out where to shift at in 3 months. Didn't really want to learn again.

I'll give it a bash this afternoon, let you know how it goes.

Cheers

Jamie

Or the other way is wind the needle fully clockwise(may need to be lifted above the surround to do so) and you can feel it skip on the shaft. This will just move the needle up so when you bring it back it'll sit at a higher rpm than before. Now you just do the same to adjust it back to zero in the other dirrection.

This has worked for me each time i've played with the cluster

Cheers

I tried doing that originally, I could feel it skip as you said, but regardless, when I started it the needle would hit rock bottom, and skip back as such
