I was talking to some Engineer friends last night and they claim because of the current world finanicial crisis Ford are NOT going ahead with the V6 engine in the Falcon, but are going to keep the current I6 engine.
They swear this is fact because and they are in the know with Ford AU. Has anyone heard about this or is it just crap?

God I hope this is true.
Unfortunately it is actually cheaper for Ford to use the V6 than try to engineer the I6 for lower emissions.

I really think the news is all bad for the I6.More stringent emission laws are on their way and Ford, especially in the current economic climate, are unlikely to want to fork out the money to ensure comlpliancy on two 6's. That and the fact that they are pushing for global platforms and engines, all to keep costs down.
It would be brilliant though, 2 of the best 6's in the world are I6, ie Ford AU and BMW, wish we could keep it.

They would be too far down the track of conversion to stop now. The new engine would be ready to mount in tomorrow. Development on the I6 would have stopped years ago, right after they did the software update on the FG.
Twin turbo V6 has already been spotted in VIC under testing 6-9 months ago. |

Unfortunately I do not think this is true. I would be happy if there is even a Falcon to put the V6 into in 2010.

If they did decide this they would have 14 months to get the engine euro 4 compliant and then that to do testing for reliability.
Seriously doubt it but, I hope I'm wrong. <--- this is how much I want the I6 to continue .

The I6 is a superior design. The V6 is a result of a series of compromises, mainly packaging requirements (it's physically smaller thus easier to stick into smaller cars, easier to put behind the front axle). It's downsides include horrible harmonics, that require extra rotating mass (balance shaft) to even out. I don't see how the Ford V6 will be a step forward, in the Mazda CX9 it's a thirsty slow waste of time.

The main reason we were told for the I6's demise was that it's cheaper to make a million V6's in America than 100,000 I6's in Geelong. Euro 4 is icing on the cake.

Can anyone find the info on how much per cent of the world's pollution Australia puts out? I remember being some minuscule number like 2% or something.

I agree with you completely, they are good engines and I have nothing against japanese imports (I don't like the term ricers). The reason I said the two that I did is they are one of very few that are still building I6. Soon to be just BMW and they have said that fomat is here to stay because the V6 layout is mechanically inferior.

It may turn out to be cheaper to assemble the V6 here in Australia rather than the I6, as with the current sales levels, it doesn't make sense to keep the I6. The V6 can be built here as is, however the I6 needs modifications to get it through Euro IV, which costs something Ford doesn't have - Money. Ford Australia could even cast the motor here. I'm sure Bossxr8 can add to this discussion. Grimus - don't get your hopes up. There are going to be some very disappointed fans come 123.

Alloy block I6 would fix the Euro4 problem, and have added benefits. But that's a big investment in all sorts - manufacturing, testing, reliability trials etc.

I know nothing specific about the merits or costings of the I6 vs V6 for Ford but there are some very major companies in my industry overturning multi million dollar decisions to move back into Aus with the way the dollar is going. Shell the best example.

The I6 has been on and off again over the past 12 months ..... at the moment the I6 is off.
It is agreed that I6 is 'better' than the V6 by hieracrchy but cannot be produced in the states, will not be exported, doesnt comply with emissions etc. No V6 twin turbo being run in any test mule and is not an option at this stage. It just hasnt worked for production/emission reasons ..... something else is considered which could upset a few .... Volvo anyone? Production of V6 compared to I6 is only double that in the US compared to here. It is a month by month scenario at the moment and no decisions have been set in concrete on anything due to what is going on in the states and world wide. | [/url] |

Interesting that the Yanks like the I6 over the V6. As for Volvo - I'd liken it to Mazda.
