I was just told this evening my brake lights are gone. I can't seem to find where the fuse box is. There is a panel in front of the drivers seat, but I can't get the bloody thing open.

Firstly welcome the forums,
There is a fuse box in the engine bay and there is one behind the dash as well. Did you check if both globes are blown? Do your parkers work? Or even the brake switch behind the pedal fault.

The one in the engine bay is right up near the windscreen on YOUR right hand side (when facing the front of the car) it's just behind the airbox
the other one is behind the glove box. Empty all your junk out of it, push the sides together and it'll drop down a little more, then unhook the thing that makes the door open slowly, it's like a key hole shaped thing that just unclips. Your glove box should drop right down out of the way. In one of the fuse panels, theres a tiny little yellow pair of tongs. Use that to pull your fuses, not pliers as you'll probably break a fuse. And you'll bust your nails trying to do it with your fingers. Uhh.... not that I worry about that sort of thing..... :S
