The first aussie TC V6 cortina they sold 500 of them where are they now!
Anyone had one or driven one or own one. When were they made from me thinks the falcon 6 must of came in them about jan 1972 ? So did they make the V6 in the start of the TC or when we got the V6 capri ? Were they all 4 sp manual. |

I think you'll find that the actual number was closer to 200 V6 Cortinas,
they weren't popular, almost everyone wanted the 4 cylinder at the time. My dad was a foreman road tester at Metro ford in Brizzy at the time and did his RTs on Capri and Cortina. He shudders when i mention the Essex v6... |

Yes they were junk i had a TC with hot 2 liter that hammered till the day it revved to 8 grand then snapped the rear cam tower,I had a mate with a wrecked 3lt V6 so that went in but it wasnt up to the task,so i went the whole hog and fitted a 250 with a top loader now that turned it into a weapon for its time long live the 6yl TC/TD cortina.

I never even knew there was a V6 version, I thought it was straight 6 or 4 only.

Unique cars and parts claims that around 500 V6s were installed in TC Cortinas. I'm not sure when the Cortina with the first Falcon six came out, but I thought it might have been in the second half of 1972?

I think that this story may have come about as the very early build 2 litre TC Cortinas had the Capri V6 4 speed box fitted behind them via a sandwich plate between block and bell housing.

I was talking to a fellow at a swap meet a few years back and he said that he had a Capri V6 box but it was out of a Cortina. I asked on here about it and that's what I was told. Maybe the early 2 litre four speed box was not considered durable by Ford Australia or just maybe Ford of England continued to use the old V4 box (much the same as the V6 box) behind the Pinto 2 litre so we did too.
TD had both the pre cross flow and the crossflow engines. Obviously the 200 & 250 powered ones had the square "200" or "250" badges but the later ones did indeed have "3.3" & "4.1" badges. Come to think of it I have not seen a TD with a 3.3 or 4.1 badge for a very long time though. |

I owned a two door TC cortina with a v6 engine. (import job)
Sold may years ago the new owner was going to V8 it. Havent seen it since wish I still had it. |

Apart from the Savage and Crayford Conversions, as far as I know there were never any V6 (TC/Mk 3) Cortinas produced by Ford in either Britain or Australia.
I know there may have been V6s in Sth African cars. They love the Essex over there. The later Mk 4/5 TE/TFs had V6s in the UK but they were based on the Cologne Engines as opposed to the Essex engines.....There may have been 2.5lt Essexs in the Cortinas.....I may have to go thru my old Ford Heritage magazines. As for the derogatory Essex V6 comments, you've obviously never owned one. They are awesome motors if you know how to look after them. They don't rev too hard but they have heaps of torque, enough to blow away most modern cars when you get them rolling. |

Don't they have a timing gear weakness, from the factory at least? The only one I've driven was in a Gilbern Invader - something to google!

yes the cam gear is fibre just like it is on a Holden red 6. I suppose over time they age and fail but they are made out of fibre specifically to act as a mechanical "fuse".

Mechanical fuse is nice concept, but (from experience) I can tell you that the 'fuse' is not all that breaks/bends when one of these lets go. I got as far as discovering dizzy didn't turn (due to stripped camshaft gear) and at least 4 bent valves on my reco'd heads - called an 'interference' motor. Left me stranded at Bungendore, 60km from home. ...(and later during strip down) maybe the cause of the failure was the loss of a tooth on the crankshaft gear and things all got cross footed and munched...... Regardless, 'spare' motor got me mobile again reasonably quickly. Solution..... 1. look after it and don't over rev. 2. fit an after market metal cam gear, preferably with new matching crankshaft gear to avoid wear problems. 3. when rebuilding, fit a new one as part of the expense (like timing belts) Having said all that, I've only ever had one go on me. The crapi was pretty reliable if you paid attention to what was going on under your butt. (aka preventative maintenance). Remember, these cars come from a different era, when 3000mile (5000km) services were the norm. (with full rebuild after 100,000miles) |
