FG X acknowledges strong heritage of the Falcon nameplate
Refreshed Territory SUV delivers purposeful exterior with packaging and space customers have come to expect from the award-winning SUV MELBOURNE, 14 Aug., 2014 – Ford has confirmed that the 2014 Falcon will be known as the FG X when it goes on sale later this year. The “FG” series prefix carries over for the refreshed Falcon range, acknowledging the strong heritage of the long-running Fairmont and Ghia nameplates that have featured on previous prestige Falcon models. The letter “X” is also a significant piece of the Falcon story, having been used for both the original Falcon XK model in 1960 and through four-generations of Falcons from the 1960s through to the 1990s, including some of the more popular Falcon models like the XR, XW, XY, XA, XB, XD and XF. Ford arrived at the FG X model code after significant feedback from key enthusiasts as well as the senior product development and marketing teams. “As one of the country’s most recognised nameplates, Ford wanted to make sure this celebration Falcon was worthy of the FG X name,” according to Ford Australia President and CEO, Bob Graziano. “Our Falcon customers know our story, so it is appropriate we acknowledge for them, enthusiasts and all Australians that Falcon is a significant part of the fabric of the Australian cultural landscape. The FG X carries this on and will be recognised as one of the best Falcons ever. “Falcon fans have quickly endorsed the styling of the 2014 Falcon and moving forward, it provides a strong visual link to our future, which will include cars like the refreshed Focus, all-new Mustang and all-new Mondeo, as well as the Australian designed and engineered Everest SUV.” Visually, the 2014 Falcon sedan features distinctive and refined front and rear design treatments and proven drivetrains that will give customers the choice of four, six and V8 engines. When the Falcon is launched later this year, it will be the only Australian-built large car available with three engine choices – four, six and eight cylinders – as well as EcoLPi LPG and turbo variants. The Falcon showcases Ford’s global design DNA with a signature trapezoidal grille, chiseled head lamp treatment and smoother, wrap-around tail-lamps with LED technology that will feature on high-series models. These features accentuate the high levels of design refinement that will appear across the refreshed Falcon range. The multi-award winning refreshed Territory SUV delivers a purposeful exterior with the packaging and space that customers have come to expect from the only Australian-designed and engineered family SUV. “The Ford Territory sets a benchmark for family-friendly SUVs and the refreshed Territory will carry this on,” Graziano said. Ford’s customer base for the Falcon and Territory is huge. More than 3.5 million Falcons have been sold since 1960 and 155,000 Territory SUVs have been sold since the nameplate launched in 2004, entrenching it as a favourite with Australian families. The refreshed Territory SUV will be known as the SZ II and like the current range, will be available in the TX, TS and Titanium variants. Mechanically the SZ II will continue with the proven in-line 4.0-litre six-cylinder petrol engine and award-winning 2.7-litre Duratorq TDCi diesel V6. Pricing, features and specifications of the Falcon and Territory range will be revealed closer to launch later this year. With the arrival of the refreshed Falcon and Territory, Ford will continue its product onslaught throughout 2015 with the arrival of the refreshed Focus and Focus ST, all-new Mondeo, Mustang coupe and convertible and the eagerly anticipated Ford Everest SUV. By 2016 Ford will have refreshed, or completely updated, its entire model lineup.

They say it's nod the x series? The first thing I thought of is how it's the complete opposite, way to go ignoring the whole 60 years.
Honestly it's something I would expect from GMh...just tacky.

It's very tacky. It sounds like it was made up by a group of motoring enthusiasts completely out of touch with the rest of the world. You know the types, those who think that the lack of TV ads is the reason why the Falcon isn't selling...

I thought of X as in final ford falcon and stiff. Agree with the above, comes across as insulting not as a pleasant nod. Ford Falcon FX would be more of a nod to the x series IMO, FZ would have a good final code, (F)alcon with the final letter of the alphabet to represent the end.

I agree, being near Broady means they get a good supply.
FX wouldnt work, Holden name. FF - Final Falcon? But its before G so that doesnt work. FZ - As mentioned, end of the line, seems so simple its almost stupid......

I guess they wanted something special for the last of the Falcons.
Seeing they were stuck with it having to be an FG. FG MkIII is not special. FG X is. |

After having the whole day to process this, I still don't like the new name. I really don't like it. It clashes with 54 years of Falcon tradition.
And as MAD mentioned in the Last Falcon thread, the Fairmont Ghia tribute thing has already been done with the original FG. If they miss the name so much, they should have brought it back instead. I think I'll keep calling it the FZ, as that's what I've been calling it in my head and is what I was expecting it to be called.

Honestly, at the end of the Day- it won't stop people buying the car if they like the look of it. FG X or FZ. Yes it's sentimental to us Ford Fans but Consumer X won't care.

Does the model designation really put you off buying a car? its like saying you dont like someone because of their name.
I think they put it down to there not being many letter combinations left and love it or hate it FG X will stick in your mind a bit better than two letters. i havnt heard of many cars with 3 letters as the designation before. At least theyre attempting to bring some of the heritage with it. They couldnt really go and call it the XF as a F series homeage to the X series. but since they arent calling it the FH i cant go around saying Falcon Hell :( |

X is usually given to experimental models and designs.
Dont see how it fits in. At least its not called the XFG. |

In that case sales will go up and Joshua Dowling is going to love this car to death and tell everyone he bought one with his own money.

at the end of the say, who gives a flying f##k about the name?
as long as the car is great it could be called the ford wobblycock for all i care. i am loving the photos and after talking to people who have driven them, they are shaping up to be an excellent car.

You do know they had little choice. It was going to cost a mint to get a new model code certified as they would have had to do alot of testing etc.

I think the market will just abbreviate it sensibly to FX falcon...
no matter what ford wants to call it.. remember when they released the Falcon S XR8... everyone ignored the "s" and called it a XR8 and ford with tail between legs in the dead of night, quietly dropped the S.. |

Not their fault.
Ford US are the ones to blame. They will not accept this car, they could build it themselves and sell it across the world but refuse to.

Which is dumb as they don't have a global 4 door RWD car.

Am I seriously the only person who doesn't have an issue with FG X?

let's face it Ford marketing and PR have stuffed up from the get go with the release of this model... so 'X' really is a befitting designation
