Default VFACTS August 2018

VFACTS August: Market up – slightly

Australia’s new-vehicle market has clawed back some of the declines it posted over recent months, notching up a 1.4 per cent overall increase in August.

According to preliminary sales data obtained by motoring.com.au ahead of official VFACTS sales figures due on Wednesday (September 5), sales increases were notched up by 4×4 utes, small SUVs, medium SUVs, large SUVs and people-movers in August.

That marks a significant turnaround from the 7.8 per cent sales slump in July – the largest monthly sales decline so far this year – when only small and upper-large SUVs posted sales lifts.

The biggest movers last month were medium SUVs (up 13 per cent), while large cars were the biggest losers – down more than 59 per cent.

And while Toyota continued on its merry way at the top of the sales charts (with 18,333 sales being up 1.7% on August 2017, representing a 20.5% market share), the biggest increase was posted by second-placed Mazda (10,740, up 26.2%, 11/7% share).

Of the mainstream brands, the biggest loser was once again Holden, which tallied just 4356 sales (down 37.6% for a 4.7% share) to be trailed only by Subaru (3845, down 16%) in the list of top 10 brands by sales in August.

In between, third-placed Hyundai was up 2.6 per cent and fourth-placed Mitsubishi was up 6.6 per cent, fifth-placed Ford was down 10.3 per cent and sixth-placed Volkswagen was down 1.9 per cent, and seventh-placed Kia was up 2.5 per cent and eighth-placed Nissan was 8.4 per cent.

Once again the Toyota HiLux was Australia’s top-selling new vehicle last month with 4275 sales, followed by the Ford Ranger (3515), Toyota Corolla (3033), Mazda3 (2959) and Mazda CX-5 (2599).

Toyota was also helped by more than 2000 Prado sales (up 79%), 1259 Kluger sales (up 21%) and 1684 RAV4 sales (up 4.9%).

Mazda, meantime, posted a 26 per cent sales boom thanks to its M-Day campaign, which helped generate a 37 per cent increase in Mazda3 sales and a 27 per cent hike in CX-5 sales, while stronger CX-3 and BT-50 sales put both models in the top 20.

Stronger i30 sales saw it rank sixth overall and, with help from almost 2000 Tucson sales, helped Hyundai sell 8000 vehicles, while stronger Triton sales kept the Mitsubishi workhorse in the top 10 (one place behind Nissan’s X-TRAIL with 1912 sales – up almost 90 per cent).

In contrast, apart from a 10 per cent lift in Everest sales to 492, Ford’s only shining light was again the Ranger, while Holden’s top-selling model was also a ute (the Colorado, in 17th overall), followed by the Commodore, which posted another monthly sales rise, to 682.

I get the feeling the Ranger sales are tempered by the imminent arrival of an model update. Perhaps, like the Mustang, certain buyers are waiting for the update.

Exactly. And proven by the huge number of front wheel drive SUV's powered by weedy N/A small capacity 4 cylinder engines are on the road.

Agree. Plus Mazda 3 2.5 engine.

Anybody read that double cab utes take another 6m3 to brake from 100km/hr compared to a hatch/sedan type vehicle.

I would wait for the update with 2.0L A10, it's jump in refinement is well worth it.

absolutely. and its not something that has just happened. the make up of the top 10 selling cars in Australia has been that way for some time now.

I believe its only a matter of time before corolla, mazda3 and i30 start to slide down the list as well. cx5 is already knocking on the door, with Tucson, x-trail and rav 4 not that far off.

higher set cars are just so much easier to live with, day in, day out. its an easier height to hop in and out of, to load shopping in and out, to load kids in and out, and most of them are more versatile in their capabilities as well.

First time I hadn't had a falcon in the drive for over 20years, and I was concerned I would miss my FG. By the time I drove the Territory home, I was wondering why I didn't make the move years ago. Falcon is a great family car. Territory is better in almost every way.

My folks bought a new Tucson in January. (I tried to steer them in to an Escape, but they didn't want to pay for premium fuel.. typical pensioners) Even that, I found a very nice place to be, and while looks are subjective, I reckon it looks ok on the outside also.

there was a bit of resistance from my dad at first, as he's always had sedans, but after owning it for a few days he was a convert also.

This is the thing I've looked at the Mondeo and wondered why doesn't it see well? its good looking and well specked.
but would I buy one? no way. I see its about to get dropped now.

I see Camry has fallen off the top 20 list too. can anyone advise how many they sold

After buying an SUV my only regret was not getting one sooner.

Family sedans are like something from the 1950s, seriously past their use by date. Sports or performance sedans are different.

probably because the camry V6 is a different class to the 4cyl?? maybe
camry/aurion used to be classed differently and they are the same car

but in that reasoning the hilux would have 4 different classes, 2wd, 4wd, cab chassis (work) and well back (family) so i don't know

I picked those numbers up from caradvice.com.au. They have a 1/2/3 ranking in each type of vehicle class up to a certain $ category. The Camry is number 1 in medium cars up to x $.

In SE Queensland where I drive for a job I see 3/4 new camrys fro each zb so 1604/683 bout right.

Because us stupid Aussies pay the ridiculous prices they ask.

Once upon a time, utes were reserved for tradesmen, people with a load to shift like dirt bikes for example, or for off-road enthusiasts. Now, they’re the weapon of choice to take the kids to soccer training, and the biggest load the tray sees is the weekly groceries, with not a speck of dirt anywhere near the all terrain tyres.

They are a vehicle which is jack of all trades but master of none, yet we will pay $60k for one.

Well we bought a CX5 out of requirement (Family), wanted a Mondeo but somethings are not worth the battle. In saying that for the $$ the CX5 is pretty decent vehicle.

If i wanted a car, it wouldn't be any from that list.
