Default Road Rules in Melbourne (VIC)

Hi all.

Im taking a weekend trip/holiday thing to Melbourne later in July, and someone told me the road rules were different. He said something like the way you turn right in a multi-laned road is different than in NSW??

Does anyone have any idea to help me, cause Im not the greatest city driver...

If that's what they're talking about, it only applies in the CBD of Melbourne. I hate hook turns too! :(

Basically, it's turning right from the left hand lane, giving way to all other traffic in the intersection. In practice, it often means you don't get to make the right hand turn until the end of the green light cycle you enter the intersection on.

basically everything is the same, except not many 1 way streets at all, and watch out for u-turns people can and will do them anywhere.

when you merge lanes it is every man for them self, and if its a freeway they speed up to block you getting on.

Hook turns only apply at some intersections where you cross trams, unlikely you'll have to do one to be honest. If you do they are very easy once you do the first one. In some ways they are far safer than just cutting across oncoming traffic.

Apart from that, most rules are the same. Oh, be prepared for a few speed camera fines to follow you home about 2 weeks later....Bracky loves interstate suckers..I mean visitors.

Don't speed - it kills
take a break every 2 hours, - stop, revive, survive
dont drive and drive - or you're a bloody idiot
wipe off 5 stay alive

The main thing is that in Vic everyone wants to get where they are going by being that one car in front, so expect to be pushed in front of, not let in, and oh one more thing, an indicator in victoria means I am changing lanes NOW so look out !

Wow this makes it all sound so stressful!

Cameras arn't as easy to pick as other state - no signs. Look out for plain falcons, commo's, magnas, navaras, santa fe's, rav4's and rodeo's. They're the main offenders. Really anything parked really straight on a level piece of grass by the road is ddogy - even dodgyer if there's a brick under a wheel!

or just don't speed...

Hook turns are stressful if you don't know what your doing. There are signs in the handful of intersections where you'll actually have to do them (all in the CBD). If you need to do one, pull over to the left in the middle of the intersection (i.e. park yourself on the ped crossing ;)) and wait for the light to turn orange/red. Make sure noones belting through the orange or red, especially trams! They have wussy bells, not horns!. When things are clear, pull a full throttle right turn; cutting off the couriers/cyclists/taxi drivers/asians who are trying to overtake on the inside of you.

Ohh, and theres no such thing as 'left turn at red lights when safe' or whatever it is...

Its not all as bad as what we have listed, but compared to NSW its a whole different ball game, i lived in sydney for 30 years, and melbourne for the past 2 odd years, and would rather drive in NSW any day.

Dont stress, as far as the Government are concerned its all safe unless you speed, talk on the phone or spin your wheels. Do none of this and you will become an invulnerable supercar that could not possibly ever be involved in any sort of accident. Thats what they tell us over and over and over and over and over and over..............and over and over :

I was in Melbournr recently for a couple of days and stayed in CBD and from a spectators point of view the hook turn goes something like this. You can't do a right turn from right lane because of trams,so you do it from the left lane, but only at certain marked intersections. When approaching intersection drive into left lane, when lights are green move into intersection and stop infront of traffic comming from left stopped at lights and you effectivly "block" that traffic. At the end of the green when the lights turn red you then you get a right turn green arrow thus allowing you to turn safely. Oh yeah it looks realy wierd, prolly feels worse the first cupla times you do it.
Hope thats right. :

Think of Victoria as a whole lot of really fun games all rolled into one.. You've got Rat Race, Twister, Monopoly (with lots of lost beauty padgent cards), and Operation.

And its a time passing experience... we dont play I-spy in Victoria, its more like spot the SpeedCamera, Red-Light Camera, Speed Kills signs, Road Toll Display Board etc... if your really lucky you will find the ever illusive courteous driver, but ONLY if your lucky.

And if you play our little "I spy Which type of Camera" game you'll be at your destination in no time!

Good luck and Enjoy

You forgot the new and improved "I suddenly see a speed camera so I'll slam on the brakes even though I'm already 10kph under the limit cause I'm a paraniod tool therefore almost causing a 70 car pile up behind me" conga line. This is most often played on the Western ring road and is quite a sight to see come peak hour.

Indeed Casper, and following the tremendous success of this game on the western ring road, they have now decided to make a portable version of the game that can be installed at every set of lights. The lite version is called 'Amber Slam' (tm) and its going to ensure only the elite get to maintain undamaged front bumpers.

When my uncle was here last year, he was telling me to keep to the speed limit, don't get distracted... and so on, and so on.

Must be those brain retardation things the Victorian government has that firmly implants into your mind that you must be on or under the speed limit.
