This is from the Gregorys Manual for a check of the TFI. When the ignition is switched on there should be no reading on the meter.
"Using suitable jumper leads, connect the positive terminal of the wireing connector (red/green wire) to the ignition coil positive terminal and the negative terminal of the wireing harness connector (pink/blue wire) through an ammeter to the ignition coil negative terminal." The terminals do not seem to be accessible from the top. Difficult from below so is it possible to connect the meter at some other point? Maybe worth cutting the wire to connect the meter and rejoin the cable using a connector? |

Had another look at this and it is possible to access the coil from the top from the front and to remove the clip from the plug and remove the plug. Surprised because most of the plugs seem to have been well designed to make removal difficult but not for efficient connection.
The connections to the removed plug could be used as the connection to the meter which would complete the circuit in place of the coil. Cannot understand the need for all those jumper leads. A short length of a standard paper clip wire (with the ends rounded) is about the right size to plug into the terminals in the plug and can be bound or soldered to light wires to the meter. The resistance of the coil being replaced by the meter is about 0.7 to 0.9 ohms. And no current should flow because there should be no leakage. Anyone see any problems with this? Saw a note somewhere about the gap jumped by a spark from a good ignition system. ??? Also a note that poor contacts in the plugs in the TFI circuit can cause a hot start problem. |

Tried the meter connected in place of the coil and looks OK but the best test would be when the TFI was hot. Do not know if some leakage is OK but would think any would indicate that the TFI is about to fail. Would suggest a small resistor of something like 1/4 watt 5 to 100 ohms be connected to the end of one piece of paper clip.
Information about these units should be available from the manufactures and is probably somewhere on the internet. Why can't I find it? |
