Hey guys im just curious if you could fit an old ea series auto into an eb-el series??? I'm told the older auto is more durable but i'm looking for a later model car. I' thinking I could buy an EL and if the box died replace it with the EA 3 speed auto?

They were more durable than the early EA 4sp's, by the EL they were stronger than the early ones & the bugs worked out. Have a drive of one and then try it with the shifter in 3 not D - you will see where the above post is coming from. Because of the overdrive they were able to run a shorter diff ratio, so you will be pulling more revs when crusing anywhere from 70km/h up

pretty much you get an EBII (or on wards) with the p/e switch = better than EA 3 speed all round, and durability isnt really an issue i wouldnt think with around 200Hp in front of them, give or take depending whether EB or EL

Thats what I love about this forum. Someone asks a question which is followed by a series of "why would you bother" replies (even though he stated in the first post why he want to). Why not take the extra 10 seconds it takes to explain why its not worth worrying about and make your post meaningful.:
Failure of the 4 speeds is almost always caused by abuse or neglect. Service it when it is supposed to be serviced and fit a trans cooler (if there is not one already) and it will keep your car going for a long time. Also keep in mind that the 3 speeds were put behind less powerful engines in lighter cars with diff ratios to suite.
