My jaw near on made a heavy thud on the floor at work the other day when one of the mucho stupido apprentices told me how much Ford quoted me on his little problem.
What had happened is the head gasket on his EL Futura (I6) decided to play dead which cause cylinders 1 and 2 to fill with coolant. When he went to start it he hydrauliced the motor buggering the main bearings and I think maybe bent a con rod or two. Ford rebuilt, NOT replaced his motor for $4500!! A bit steep when you can buy a recond XR motor from a wreckers for under $1500. Any one else been sucked in like this?? : |

my only issue with ford was a replacement drivers mirror, which got knocked off by some inconsiderate drive by, ford quoted $280 for a replacement unit, got the mirror re-done by local mirror place and fitted it back in, all up $38.

Yes it could be done cheaper and some have said they have done a head gasket for under a grand. I remind those people you didn't replace the main bearings for a head gasket!? (unless you're me.... I did but I was working in Ford Parts @ the time.) Further more, con rods.... not what I'd include in the cost of a head gasket. : Most Ford workshops charge $90/Hr retail. Did he ask for some sort of trade discount on the parts and labor?? D :

yer ford can be a bit expensive. i had a problem with my front demist and got qouted $700 from ultratune. Went down to ford and they wanted $1200. I told them that ultratune quoted me for $700 and i asked them why they wanted $500 more?..........the guy replied saying that they will use origional parts.
Sounds fair enough i suppose, but i ended up fixing the front demist for $450 with origional parts : |

What do you expect from a ford dealer who usually charges $93.50 an hour for labour? If you want cheap you don't go to ford, simple as that. But then again, head gasket jobs with us (a ford dealer) start at $1200 providing the head only needs to be surfaced and the radiator only needs to be flushed. Anything else is extra, but yeah, many times I've costed up head gasket jobs for only $1200...
