Default iPod Nano problem - no space!?

I bought my gf an iPod Nano and I've been attempting to load some songs onto it. I did one album of 20 songs which was fine, but when I tried to do a second album it said there wasn't sufficient room on the iPod (its a 4gig) to put them!

Now, unless each of these 40 songs is 100mb in size, I was starting to think there was a problem. Sure enough, when I'm in iTunes and click on the iPod, it brings up a memory bar (see attached pic).

This says 28.69gb used and 129mb free - :

I've tried re-booting the iPod as well as the computer but I still have the same problem. Can anyone suggest where the problem may lie? :

Were you reading CDs into iTunes so you could convert them to the IPod's format? Perhaps what you are looking at is the PC's hard drive status and you have run out of disc space?

Yeah, thats what I was thinking too.

Do Ipods have software on them to format the drive or reload the firmware? If they do, thats what I'd do. (I have a Creative Zen and its has a menu for all of this stuff)

Already thought that myself. My C drive has 20gig used with 10gig free and my D drive has 1gig used with 21gig free.

Its definately reading the iPod because I just dropped a few songs onto it and the "free" space has just dropped to 85mb...

I've done a full reboot on the iPod (hold some buttons down for 6 seconds until the Apple logo comes up) and also rebooted the laptop but still have the same problem

Bingo. If they are AIFF, Apple Lossless or one of the WM's, then they are Lossless, and take up more space than a AAC or MP3, which are Lossy.

The other thing for you to do is to install iTunes 7, as you are using the old version. The new iTunes has a much better iPod interface.

Good Luck.

Only the old Shuffle lets you play with Partition sizes. The iPod Nano and iPod don't let you, as they require the Dock Cable to connect to a computer. The iPod, like Windows often requires a re-install to get it going again. If mine crashes, I do that first. It usually fixes anything drastic.

Brand new iPod nano's are in an Aluminium casing, like the Minis used to be. The new Nano is repackaged to the extend that it is no longer a 'Flash Drive", and looks more like the rest of the iPod family, and has a Dock Connector clip.

Ok this is starting to pee me off just a little...

I dowmloaded the latest version if iTunes (even though my home computer has the older version and recognises the iPod just fine). Ran the update during which it asked if I wanted to update the iPod firmware as well. I said yes and then after it was all updated guess what - its still acting up! (see pic of status screen)

It seems to be reading that the Nano is 30gig in size - all very puzzling...

take apple to court!

otherwise track down an 'apple shop' near you and get them to look at it, something is wrong. otherwise (im not sure how you update the firmware/bios in the apple) install an older version of the firmware and reinstall a new one for the 4gig pod

btw what version of photoshop is that?

Never liked iPod, never will. My old Zen is still going strong, outlasting many pods.

Wipe it clean, get rid of every trace of iTunes and wipe the iPod clean as much as you can. Get new versions of iTunes and firmware. If still nothing roll back the firmware (try before the manufacture date). If still nothing just send it back to the store and get it replaced, it is one very confused little iPod.

Oh, and is that Photoshop CS?

Yes, all the songs are being saved in mp3 format.

Besides, I don't think this is the issue as something (iTunes I guess) seems to think the iPod only has 100mb free space.

Not a very helpful tip but I do agree.

Fastxr : Hope you fix it, I know how much I'd be sh1tty with the Zen if it gave me grief.

Have you tried manually accessing the disk (not using itunes)?
Try and delete the files manually and try again.

Problem solved! :1syellow1 :

I uninstalled iTunes (for the second time) and then reinstalled it and bingo, problem solved. Obviously there was some confusion within iTunes when "talking" to the iPod (the iPod didn't come up in Windows Explorer either) which now seems to have been resolved. Its just funny that there was no problems on my home computer and it used exactly the same software. Oh well _

Thanks everyone for all your suggestions!
