Default The big move

The wife and I are looking at moving from Queensland to Western Australia for work. I would like some opinions on whether we should pay removalists to take everything with us, (furniture, white goods etc), or sell everything save money on transport and start fresh when we get there. Anyone done this before? Any info would be great.

We did it 5 years ago but the opposite way we came to Qld, We used Grace Brothers who used a 20ft shipping container $3500 not inc insurance and it goes by rail. No damage and excellent service.

I reckon you should sell all the normal stuff like whitegoods, TV, Stereos.. dining table, large cupboards. That stuff you can replace with new stuff. Then you don't have much to take and maybe you can load it all into a rented trailer.

usually transport companys want to know how many cubic metres of space you need in van trailer or container if you want go that way, but through a transort company you might have to load unload yourself unless arrangements are made in that respect for labour, or a good moving company will come to your door and give a quote, they will pack load and unload at the other end if required, some will even get utilities turned off and on for you depends on the company, best to ring around.

Oh... All the times I've moved house (Melbourne -> Jervis Bay -> Melbourne -> Sydney) my employer has gotten Toll in to do the job. They are really good. They'll drop off the boxes you need early then if theres anything you dont know how to pack, they will come on the day and pack it for you. Very professional mob.

Actually been doing a bit of cash work for a removalists here lately, bugger of a job but take it from me, if youre going to do it, pay a removalists and get insurance on your items. Not because theyre rough but because sometimes things just dont come out the way they go in.

Pertuan, in clarification, Toll do NOT move Defence members, but sub contract each move to contractors. I know this because when I and my wife were moved from Sydney to Newcastle we were moved by the cheapest contractor (like everything that happens in Defence). They screwed up the dates, damaged much of my belongings (which I couldn't claim, but that's another story), lost some irreplacable crystal, and left three cupboards behind. That particular contractor no longer does Defence work.

Having said that, we were also moved from Cairns to Sydney, and Grace Removals could not have been more helpful. On time, professional, no damage at all. Highly recommended.

I know its sub-contracted, but each time I've had to fill out a Toll form. I haven't had any problems with them yet. But then again, I guess the number of times I've moved is small compared to others.

Gotta agree there. We had Wridgeways I think move us from Perth to Sydney. They were first class but because the container is sent via rail over such a long distance you'll find that things will move no matter how well its packed. Plus you get the piece of mind knowing if anything tragic happens, you're covered
