As bad as the GTO looks, in our eyes, it still looked so much better then everything else that has worn the Pontiac badge in the last 20 years. I've had discussions with guys in the US who own GTOs, one guy in onto number 3, and they all agree that GM made a mistake by aiming at the Mustang. They all reckon a loaded GTO is more luxury sports coupe, all bought manuals.

Every new car in Australia that retails for over $57,009 is subject to Luxury Car Tax. Nothing is exempt.

The price in the US quoted by the original poster is AUD $31,000.

A CV8 Z Monaro had a RRP of AUD 60,490 back in 2005, which includes $5499.09 of GST.

Want to know how much Luxury Car Tax is in there?

$60490 - LCT Threshold = LCT Taxable Amount
= $60490-$57009
= $3481
less GST
= $3164.55

LCT Amount = LCT Taxable Amount less GST x 25%
=$3164.55 x 25%
=$791.14

I'm sorry, a 10% GST of $5499 and a LCT of $791 do not explain a price differential of $29,490!

I think as stated earlier the reason for the cheap Munro is due to exchange rates and heavy discounting by GM to make it competitive with the Mustang but the Stang still shat all over the Pontiac GTO not entirely sure why though the Stang is not entirely sophisticated or well built but I guess it's just cheap bang for your buck and owning a Stang is prob easy way to pick up chicks. i dunno

I've calculated the LCT on a Monaro, the GST, all as per ATO formula. All the numbers and calculations are above.

The LCT only applies to each dollar over $57,009. Given a Monaro's RRP of $60,490, that means LCT amounts to little on the price of a Monaro.

GST is one eleventh of the RRP.

What specific tax are you talking about? Clearly it's not LCT or GST.
