Was looking on yankie Ebay, looked in pontiac section and they are selling most brand new 2007 monaro/gto's for only $26995.00 US/$31000.00 AU. How do they manage to sell them for that price when over here they are double that. Transporting them over there must be a not for profit exercise. I know they have a couple more direct competitors but that seems very cheap.

Im guessing GM would subsidise Holden for the GTO's because of the higher demand over there for the Monaro/GTO. (Or hoped demand haha)
Tis true, the US does get cheaper cars, but Steffo i believe you missed the point that the M3s in the US are made in the US. We get the German ones... Im 90% sure im correct on that point, clarification anyone? |

Volume of cars as well, when they first exported monaro's to the US they imported 16 or 17,000 of them IIRC, how many sold here in total in that same year?
I doubt it was anywhere near that amount sold in total in aus.....or I could be way off the mark!!

Actually from what I've read the reason the Monaro is cheap in America is that to compete with the bargain priced Mustang GM lost money on the Pontiac GTO and hence Holden lost a lot of money.
I'm pretty sure they had a locked exchange rate for 1 Australian dollar buys 60 US cents so as to save the program from currency fluctuations but since the Australian dollar increased it meant that in reality the Holdens bought over here were subsidising the Pontiac GTO's bought in the US if you can believe it. But even after all the subsidising the Pontiac GTO just couldn't compete with the Mustang and was a relative flop (see there are some advantages of having a live axle and a V8 shared with SUV's). Cop that Holden lol lol lol |

My brother bought one in 06 for $22,500 .. He says Pontiac don't advertise them. Thinks the locals would kick up merry hell about import models....
Every one he's taken for a ride in it wants one and asked where he got it from...

Also I read that they tried to flog them in the wrong market in classic GTO territory in the mid west instead of California.
If I lived in America I would buy the Dodge Charger or a Shelby Mustang. Apparently a Mustang V8 is the same price as a base model falcon!!!!! |
