Wink Driver follows GPS into sand

Thank God he wasn't speeding!!! ;)

October 10, 2006 10:31am
Article from: Reuters

AN 80-year-old German motorist has obediently followed his navigation system all the way into a huge pile of sand, abrubtly bringing his trip to an end.
The motorist ignored a motorway "closed for construction" sign and crashed his Mercedes into a pile of sand further down the road, police have said.

"The driver was following the orders from his navigation system and even though there was a sufficient number of warnings and barricades, he continued his journey into the construction site," a police spokeswoman has said.

"His trip finally ended when he wound up crashing into a pile of sand," she added.

The driver and his wife escaped uninjured from the collision, which occurred on a motorway near Hamburg.

You missed the most important part of this report:

"The hospital treating the driver wishes to state that his brain damage was present in the patient prior to this accident."

No reflection on the GPS. Just shows you need to look out the window once in a while.

I had to laugh at that, coz the GPS systems we have at work have been known to give silly directions, but I never thought someone would actually follow them quite so literally

Aha GPS systems are good but you'd think you would watch the road at the same time, wouldn't you?

It would have to be a german tho.

I wonder at what stage did he have second thoughts about the GPS directions.. Obviously pretty late. Piles of sand are usually pretty easy to see.

An old farmer i used to do some work for had a plane. His GPS was slightly dodgy so he used to keep a vicroads directory in the back just in case! I flew with him to centeral NSW to pick up a new dog. Half way back his GPS died, so we pretty much flew low over a few mojor roads to read the big green signs. After we found a few road names we pretty much followed the highway back to melbourne, then headed out towards his place keeping an eye out for big landmarks along the way. Made the trip interesting!

I heard this on the radio whilst at work the other day. I thought it was pretty funny. Some people you have to wonder if they have a brain at all!

Sounds a bit like that clown a few years back who was driving his newly-owned RV motorhome, he put in on cruise control and went out the back to make a coffee, unbeknown to him the cruise control wasnt actually an auto pilot :
