Hey All,
I am considering upgrading to a new plan, or provider. I am currently on Bigpong with 400mb limit 512 down, 128 up. $39.95 I get insanely frustrated with Telstra, and the speed varies sooooooo bad. I normally use slightly over my limit, rarely more than 600mb. (but understand that speed will alter this)! My question is, am I better off with a different plan, or provider. If so, what plan, which provider? Thanks and Cheers, Mike

Internode = "The Best"
You will pay a bit more to set up as in getting a "modem/router" from them and paying a setup fee but after that it's all good news!! Iv'e been with them now for approx 6 months, never known the connection to be down, always fast and reliable, lots of free content, all plans are shaped and reasonably priced. http://www.internode.on.net/ |

I am currently with AAPT on the 512/128/12g plan. To upgrade to the 1500/15g plan will I need a new ADSL modem?

Hally, you wont need to change modem, or anything else to upgrade to the 1500 plan.

To upgrade to 1.5MBits/sec, your ISP may charge you for a line speed upgrade, as Telstra will most likely do this procedure from the Telephone Exchange.

Another vote for Internode here. You won't be disappointed if you go with them.
By the way, there are some new plans coming out on the 10th, so might want to hold off until then. You only have to churn and you can use the Bigpond supplied modem, so the most it should cost is $39 to change to Internode. If you are considering other providers, do check out www.whirlpool.net.au as there is stacks of information regarding broadband (and many other geeky computer things).

If you want faster connections, iiNet offers ADSL 2+ plans, that can give speeds up to 24000k (although you pretty much need to be next to the exchange for that speed).
You can check out their plans Here. They have a plan for $49.95, (+$9.95 VoIP) with 7+14GB (that is 7GB between 12pm and 2am [peak], and 14GB for the rest of the time [offpeak]) for a total of 21GB. The biggest problem with the iiNet plans, is that there is no churn option, as they have layed out their own network of Dslams, as they try to separate themselves from telstra (as much as is humanly possible in Aus). |

If you're moving from ADSL1 to ADSL2, it may involve loss of internet for up to 2 weeks as they disconnect you from Telstra's ADSL1 network and then connect you to the ADSL2 DSLAM associated with your provider.
You can try and see if your username is available at your new ISP. What I do is use a gmail address. Gives you the option of accessing it on the web or downloading it to an email client like Outlook Express and storing it on your PC. If you change your ISP, your email address remains the same. Another option is to use something like gmail and set it to forward to your ISP hosted e-mail address. Another option is to set up a domain for yourself. So you could see if the domain of DJRrules.com is available for example, then create e-mail addresses which will end in @DJRrules.com and it will bounce e-mails sent to that address to whatever e-mail address you specify.

I've been on internode for 12+ mths now. It's far better than Telstra Cable and ADSL especially for reliability.
