I have an obvious leak from my auto trans. First noticed a patch of oil on the garage floor and after panicing I had a look to find it at the back of the auto box. Does anyone out there have this problem that they have fixed themselves??? It is an I6 Forte with 100k on the clock. Should I service the whole deal? The car has been sitting for about 6 months as i have been working overseas, but it fired up straight away. Not even a flat battery!!! Just a suspect seal or something in the auto.

Get under and work out where it is leaking from
If it is just the oil pan give it a service and new gasket and it'll be good as new |

if it is the back of the box, chances are it is the rear seal on the extension housing where the tailshaft goes. AS it has been sitting the bottom of the seal would have compressed a tad, hence the leak.. It is a $4 part

Yes i had a look under and it appears to be from somewhere up the top of the tail shaft. I am thinking the seal at the rear. I have taken it for a good run this arvo and the spray pattern seems to be from up there somewhere. Think I'll leave this one to the experts????

Just check that its not excess fluid coming out of the breather at the top, mine has done it and it looks like its leaking fluid when all it is doing is coming out the breather at the top. As it heats up it can overflow and come out there.

The problem with the autos is that .... when they leak .. it drops from the back of the pan ... everytime ... so it looks like it is leaking from the back of the pan.
I had an ongoing leak in mine and found it was from the servo on the side of the transmission ... but it dribbled into the crease where the pan gasket is and then dripped from the back of the pan. If the fluid is really coming out from the breather at the top of the auto ... and I mean a lot ... it usually means the auto is on it's last legs anyway. Extension housing seals are common to go on them as well. Yesterday I had the whole thing serviced and while they were at it i had them check out the Seal at the rear of the box where the tail shaft goes in. Because the car had been sitting for 6 months not doing a thing, The seal had compressed slightly and was allowing the leak to occur. The result was full service and had the seal replaced at the same time for $280. I cant believe how much smoother the gears change now after that service. Well worth the cash I think but next time will service myself. Just gotta get some good stands......
